Automobile exhaust noise is one of the main noise sources of vehicles, while exhaust system's performance determines the level of exhaust noise. This paper appraised the overall performance of the exhaust system by simulation analysis of a certain automobile exhaust system, and studied muffler and exhaust system development and design methods simultaneously.The acoustic field distribution of exhaust system was obtained by establishing the analysis model of exhaust system, calculating acoustic field characteristics using finite element analysis software. Then, relationship between structure parameters of perforated tube and transmission loss of muffler was summed up. The optimization measures of exhaust system hanger location were raised after controlling the vibration of exhaust system by modal analysis of the exhaust system. Besides, the specific distribution of pressure, flow rate and temperature in the exhaust system were obtained by analysis on flow field characteristic of the exhaust system and the pressure loss of main components was calculated qualitatively. The simulation results have an important guiding significance in the optimization of the overall performance of the exhaust system.After research and analysis, the development and design process of exhaust muffler, the calculating method of typical muffler structure and the design methods and processes of exhaust system were summarized, which provides an important basis for developing software of exhaust muffler design and performance prediction.
