Tailings dam is an important part of the mine production facilities, and it's one of the three major construction projects in mining company. Its safety operation plays a vital role in the mine production management.This paper briefly introduces the studies about the stability of tailings dam, including limit equilibrium methods and numerical analysis methods. This paper also proposes the methods of analyzing the stability of tailings dam, including their advantages and disadvantages. The factors affecting the stability of tailings dam are saturation line, physical and mechanical properties of tailings and water, etc.By detailed analyzing the status of the project and the on-site inspection, investigating the operating conditions of Jin-Shan-Dian Xi-Ye mountain tailings dam which belongs to WISCO mining company, according to the report of geological survey and relevant material parameters, 4 calculation sections are selected. According to the Geo-Slope software, the corresponding computational model was established, the stability of tailings dam at 60m elevation was analyzed, the potential slip surface and the minimum safety modulus are also calculated. According to the actual production needs of tailings dam, the stability of tailings dam at 100m elevation, the feasibility heightening and expansion should be analyzed. According to the results, reinforcement and drainage consolidation method were combined to reinforce Jin Shan Dian tailings dam, the stability of tailings dam was effectively improved.
