In this experiment, the results of several extenders for boar semen ciyo-and room- temperature preservation were compared and the effects of equilibration time, thawing medium and temperature and some other factors on boar semen freezing were studied. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. In the room temperature preservation experiment, there is no significant difference (P>0.05) between the ZQ(+PVA) extender and the ZO extender on sperm motiliy, indicating that the PVA can be used to replace the BSA for preseivation of boar semen. 2. With ZO(+PVA) as extender, the motility of sperm preserved at 20C (41.5%) was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that preserved at 1St (37.5%) after the spermatozoa were kept for 12 days. 3. The number IV extender was the best among the extenders tested and it produced a sperm motility of 32.4% alter freezing and thawing. 4. When 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% of O.E.P. was added to the number LV extender, the acrosome integrity was improved markedly (64.3% vs 752%, P<0.05), although the effects of O.E.P. concentration were not significant (Pz>O.05). 5. The motility of semen frozen in straws (38.2%) was higher than that frozen in pellets (32.6%). 6. A room-temperature pre-equilibrium treatment for 4 hours improved the sperm motility significantly (42.5% vs , P<0.05) , but the difference between treatments for 2 and 6 hours was not significant. 7. The number III thawing medium was the best among the media tested and the motility of sperm after freezing and thawing reached 42.9%. 8. Among the thawing temperatures tested the SQ t was the best and it produced a significantly (P0.05) when used to thaw the boar semen. 10. When the semen frozen and thawed with the best protocol in this experiment was used to inseminate sows a pregnancy rate of 100% and a average litter size of 9 were obtained.
