38 arbitrary primers(lObp) were used to amplify DNA samples of 7 native sheep breeds and 3 introduced sheep breeds from abroad, including Mongolia sheep, Tan sheep,Hu sheep,Sheep with little Tail, lVuzhumuqin sheep, Tibetan sheep, Aletai sheep, Polled Dorset, German Mutton Merino and Suffolk. And 39 arbitrary primers(lObp) were used to amplify DNA samples of 4 kindred genera, including sheep, goat, pseudois nayaur and African antelope. The results showed as follows:(l)The RAPD was an effective marker for the analysis of genetic relationship among sheep breeds and among 4 kindred genera.(2)Among 234 detected bands, 155 were polymorphic, and the percentage of polymorphic markers was 66. 24% for sheep breeds .Among 347 detected bands, 309 bands were polymorphic, and the percentage of polymorphic bands was 89. 05% for 4 kindred genera. They indicated that the RAPD had higher efficiency of polymorphism detection and sensitivity in studying the genetic variation of total DNA among sheep breeds and among 4 kindred genera. (3)The average index of genetic polymorphism of sheep breeds (1-Isp) was 0. 9139 and that of 4 kindred genera (Hsp) was 2. 4108, which showed the variation was bigger among genera than within genera. (4)The genetic relationship between different indigenous sheep breeds of China was in accord with their localities, the results from archaeology and cytogenetics and the genetic relationship between imported sheep breeds was in accord with their breeding history. (5)The results indicated that there was a nearest relationship between sheep and goat from the average index of genetic distance and the molecular dendrogram. It is also evident that the genetic distance was smaller between African antelope and sheep, and bigger between goat and pseudois nayaur.
