Chitosan, characterized with nontoxicity, biodegradability, biocompatibility and resistance to microorganism attack, has the potential for developing one effective plant growth regulator, which is beneficial to seeds germination and seedlings growth. Furthermore, not only the full utilization of chitinous resources of Zhejiang province but also alleviation of the environmental stress can be achieved. During the present study, different plants were treated with different concentration Chitosan MZS (a short form of Miaozhuangsu, one kind of plant growth regulator) via different preparation processes such as coating, soaking or spraying. And its mechanism and effect of MZS on seeds germination and seedlings growth were studied. The main results were as follows:1. As a plant growth regulator, low molecular weight Chitosan has the better function, which can effectively stimulate seeds germination and accelerate seedlings growth; while high molecular weight Chitosan is easier to form film convenient to seed coating. It is found that the blending of different molecular weight Chitosan MZS show the best results, not only with a good function of seeds germination and seedlings growth but also a good surface morphology. MZS3, the complex of Mr 1400 chitosan and Mr 30,000 chitosan at the same mass ratio, has a good effect on seeds coating, seed germination and seedlings growth after soaking treatments. Chitosan concentration and prescription time of MZS also affect seed coating, therefore show different function on different seed variety. MZS5 coating agent(0.5%) is good to kidney bean seeds, while to maize is MZS5(1.0%); MZS3(0.2%,6h) is good to radish seeds, while to kidney bean is MZS5(4h, 0.2%); and MZS2(dilute concentration 1:50) is good to radish, while to eggplant, is MZS2(dilute concentration 1:100).2. The effect of three varieties of Chitosan MZS on given plant as followed: ㎝ZS coating agents can promote seeds germination, enhance germination rate and seeds vitality, as well as a-amylase activity in germinated endosperm after applied in kidney bean seeds and54maize seeds. They increase seedling fresh weight and dry weight, seedling absorbing nitrogen, phosphor and potassium. MZS also can enhance leaf chlorophyll contents, POD activities and root dehydrogenase activities, but decrease leaf soluble protein contents of kidney bean; to maize, leaf soluble protein contents was enhanced. ㎝ZS soaking agents had little influence on seeds germination rate ,seedlings height, and seeds vitality after radish seeds and kidney seeds were treated with different concentration of MZS soaking agents during the different soaking time. It can also enhance chlorophyll contents, soluble sugar contents, NR activities in leaf, but to soluble protein contents and root dehydrogenase activities, the radish and kidney bean had different results. (3)MZS spraying agents can markedly improve seedlings fresh weight dry weight, leaf chlorophyll contents and leaf soluble protein contents after radish seedlings were treated with different dilute concentration of MZS spraying agents via different preparation processes. Contrasting to CK and MZS1, MZS2 can significantly enhance seedlings fresh weight, R/T, leaf chlorophyll contents, leaf soluble sugar contents, POD activities and SOD activities, but decrease MDA contents and leaf soluble protein contents.3.All the results of experiment show that MZS product can enhance germination rate, promote seedlings growth, and advance the synthesis of protein and carbohydrate in leaf. Also it can accelerate the growth of roots, enhance the capacity of absorbing water and nutrition, and improve the adversity resistance.4.Rice field tests were taken with Chitosan MZS coating agents and soaking agents in Fuyang county and academy of agricultural science in Yuhang. It is found that Chitosan MZS coating agents and soaking agents, especially MZS2, can improve the rice seedlings quality and rice yields. And maize yields and edible yields are also enhanced.
