Chinese cabbage crops are cultivated subspecies of Cruciferae Brassica campestris L., annual or biennial herb plants which origined in China, including ssp. rapifera Metzg., ssp. chinensis (L.) Makino., and ssp. pekinensis (Lour.) Olsson. Their products contain many kinds of vitamins, mineral elements and a little protein, sugar and cellulose. Their chromosome number is 2n=20.Chinese cabbage [B. campestris L. ssp. pekinensis (L.) Olsson], also is a kind of Chinese special vegetables, their main growing area is north of Changjiang River in China. It has plenty of varieties. The product head has characters such as adapting to storage and transportation, high yield, good quality and delicious taste, etcThe vegetable production in China are facing great opportunities and challenges following the adjustment of agriculture industry forms in China. In order to meet the market needs, we should introduce perfect varieties of Chinese cabbage from foreign countries, to enrich the germplasm of Chinese cabbage in China , and create new varieties of Chinese cabbage which has characters such as good quality, disease resistance and high yield. To meet those requirements, we made the following studies: producing tetraploids of Chinese cabbage varieties through mutation induced by colchicines.Autotetraploids of Chinese cabbage varieties introduced from Japan were induced by treating the apical portion of seedlings with dilute solution of colchicine. The results showed as follows: (D Colchicine at 0.4% concentration for 7 days was found effective for one variety. ?Chromosome number of seeds obtained from the induced tetraploid plants by selfing were identified, proving the tetraploidy (2n=4x=40). (3) The morphological, anatomical, physiological-biochemical trials were made, discovering the special characteristics of tetraploid plants of Chinese cabbage.
