The objective of this investigation was to study on the mechanism of the Chinese herbal medicine preparation "Qian Wei Shu Tai (QWST)" treating the atonia proventriculorum dairy cows, with the healthy cows as the control. By testing the biochemical characteristics and the parameters of the hemorheology, we draw the following conclusions:1 QWST, with Amomum tsao-ko Crevost. et Lemaire. (Caoguo), Areca catechu L. (Binlang) as main medicines, cooperating with Siwu Decoction and Sijunzi Decoction, can improve the appetite, the spiritual state, and the milk yield obviously.2 In this test we observe that the serum nitric oxide (NO) content of the atonia proventriculorum dairy cows rising unusually, being able to damage the mucous membrane of the stomach, is one of the reasons of this disease. The activity of the glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) of the atonia proventriculorum dairy cows decreases significantly, and the malondialdehyde (MDA) content of the atonia proventriculorum dairy cows increases markedly. The excessive oxygen free radical (OFR) can damage the mucous membrane of the stomach. The activity of the serum a -Amylase, and the content of the blood glucose decrease significantly, indicating that the digestive ability of the atonia proventriculorum dairy cows decreasing, and the insufficient energy are the main symptoms of spleen deficiency syndrome.3 In this test we observe that there is blood stasis syndrome in the atonia proventriculorum dairy cows. In comparison with the healthy group, whole blood specific viscosity, plasma specific viscosity, the content of the fibrinogen, the hematocrit (Hct), and the aggregation index (AI), et al, increase significantly, indicating that the blood stasis and insufficient nutrition make the digestive ability decrease.4 This test suggests that QWST can inhibit the production of the serum NO, with thecontent of NO reaching to the level of the healthy group on the 5th day after the treatment. QWST can effectively improve the activity of GSH-Px, and reduce the content of MDA, reaching to the level of the healthy group on the 5th day after the treatment, which makes the dynamic balance between the producing and the removing of OFR to recover the normal function of the organism. QWST can significantly improve the activity of the serum a -Amylase. reaching to the level of the healthy group on the 8th day after the treatment, and the content of the blood glucose is on the rise, reaching to the level of the healthy group on the 5th day after the treatment.5 QWST can effectively improve the parameters of the hemorheology of the atonia proventriculorum dairy cows. Whole blood specific viscosity' high ratio and low ratio, aggregation index of the red blood cell, and the Hct decrease significantly, reaching to the level of the health}' group on the 2nd day after the treatment. The plasma specific viscosity, and the content of the fibrinogen decrease significantly, reaching the level of the healthy group on the 3rd day after the treatment. The content of the total protein is on the rise, reaching to the level of the healthy group on the 5th and 8th days after the treatment. The content of the albumin (ALB) changes non-significantly. The content of the globulin increases significantly, reaching to the level of the healthy group on the 2nd day after the treatment, contributing to improving the immunity of the organism.
