The mucous cells of the skin of Pelteobagrus fulvidraco (Richardson) were studied according to the means and the criterion of Guo Anli and Duo Yuanjing. The results were shown as follows:1. The mucous cell-type in the skinThe mucous cell in the skin of P. fulvidraco could be classified into five types according to colorization with AB-PAS and the shape of the cells. Their features were described as follows:Cell-type I was slender and blue. The way on end was thin near the surface of the skin. Cell-type II was purple and globular. The bulge was next to the bottom of the skin. Cell-type III was similar to a shuttle with blue color. It was peculiar to P. fulvidraco. Cell-type IV was globosity and red after staining. The shape of Cell-type V was same to Cell-type IV, but it was smaller than Cell-type IV. Its color was blue and different from Cell-type IV. There was a special cell, which was green after staining. It was between Cell-type IV and Cell-type V. It was very small.2. The distribution of the mucous cell in the skinThe different parts of the skin represent different mucous cell types and different density. The main mucous cells were Cell-type II. HI and IV in the back. On the lateral body there were Cell-type 111% IV and V mucous cells. In the skin of belly, the main mucous cells were Cell-type III, IV and V. On the cheek the main mucous cells were Cell-type II, III and IV. In quantity, the mucous cells in the back were the most. In addition, the Cell-type IV and V lay at intervals in the skin. Cell-type IV, and V were around the skin cote.3. The effect of ConA on the mucous cells in the skinP. fulvidraco were stimulated with ConA by immersing the fish into the liquidity of ConA (the concentration was 10ug/L, the time was up to 6 days . the treatment time was half an hour every day) and injecting ConA liquidity with 1ug per weight (g) every 3 days. The results showed that the mucous cells in the skin increase because ConA was a kind ofsubstance with immunity. It cold enactive the thymus gland of the fish and there was Ig in the mucous substances, so the mucous cells were close to the immunity, especial to the exterior substances. However, whether it was an autonomous and independent mucous immunity system could not be determined, and the more study need to be done.4. The origination of the mucous cells in the skinThe mucous cells gradually became mature. All mucous cells on the surface of the skin derived from the bottom of the skin. In this process, the cells become bigger and bigger. The granules gradually increase. The mucous cells surrounding the vas like a ring were not mature.5. The secretion of the IV, V cellThe secretion of the type IV, type V mucous cell was open, The direction was on the contrary to the locomotion of the fish.6. The mechanisms of the mucus attachmentThere were two sorts of mechanisms to maintain the mucus attachment to the skin. One was the direction of the secretion. The direction of the secretion was contrary to the direction of the locomotion of the fish. The other was the distribution of the keratinization ramifications and sunken on the surface of the skin. They slow down speed of the water.7. The SOD in the mucusThe gel electrophesim of the mucus showed that there were three sorts of the SOD isozyme. This kind of enzyme can endure a definite high temperature, acid, alkali condition. The metal ion of the SOD was Cu and Zn.
