Title of the thesis: An Empirical Study on the Extension of Transgenic Cotton; Author: Yang Feng; Supervisor: Gao Qijie; Specialty: Crop production; Field of reserch: Rurul Development; College: college of Humanities and Development; Application Data: April,2004.The reactions of cotton fanners to the traits of transgenic cotton in cotton planting areas in Feng County and Pizhou County were investigated and analyzed by introducing KAP method. Advices on the breeding of transgenic cotton and its extension were also given in the paper. The main results are as follows.Cotton farmers are in urgent need of transgenic bollworm-resistant cotton varieties with the characteristics of broad-spectrum pest, disease resistance and high lint yield, have little demand in lint percentage and fiber qualities. Cotton fanners hope that cotton seeds could be provided by cotton research institutes and large-sized seed companies. The technical demands and favorites of part-time cotton fanners represent the orientation of advanced agricultural technology. Cotton farmers are in need of a series of services throughout cotton production, including pre-production service, production service and post-production service. Major cotton farmers are the pioneers of the extension and demonstration of cotton planting technology. The combination of mass media and person-to-person media is the best model of extending transgenic bollworm resistant cotton.Main advices given in the paper are as follows. The construction of cotton planting technological extension system, the cooperation between cotton research institutes, education institutes and extension departments are still needed be strengthened. Extension departments are needed to be innovated to integrate the polices of local governments and the actions of cotton farmers. Extension networks should be set up and consummated by setting up experimental and demonstration fields, imparting farmers through their viewing and emulating. Various media should be integrated to speed up the extension of cotton planting technologies. Suitable cotton varieties are needed to be selected according to local conditions. Measures are needed to be taken to strengthen the cooperation between cotton research institutes to fasten cotton breeding, especially the breeding of hybridized and short-season cotton varieties.
