Accommodating to the current developmental trend of agricultural engineering, the author conducts researches on GPS navigation technology by introducing such technologies as electronics, information and automation into traditional agricultural vehicles, which offers favorable conditions for agricultural machinery to perform precision tasks, to decrease labor intensity, to avert the environmental pollution caused by agricultural chemicals, and to reduce agricultural input. The major function of agricultural vehicle navigation information system based on GPS/GIS is to receive GPS orientation signals via the GPS receiver equipped in vehicles, then feed the signals into the vehicle-equipped computers to computerize orientation information of agricultural vehicle including its present longitude and latitude, and further store the orientation information in database to be displayed on a electronic map with powerful information-searching function, which makes it a reality to cany out real-time and continuous supervision and display of the precise locality, moving track, velocity and direction of vehicles, and is indispensable to realize precision agriculture. The overall scheme, various functional modules and realization technology of agricultural vehicle navigation system are put forward in this disertation. The hardware and software components of the system are investigated. Such technologies as GPS, GIS, GPS signal collection, and electronic map production are fully introduced. The methods to conduct communication by connecting conventional desktops and GPS is discussed, and programs corresponding communication interface software to receive via GPS receiver real-time information conforming NMEA-0183 standard is designed. In addition, in the field of agricultural vehicle navigation, this study is one of the pioneers in China to develop electronic maps through the groupware GIS development tool named MapObjects2.0 developed by ESRI Company, which can realize the common functions such zoom and cruise of navigation electronic maps. The author also studies the methods of displaying real-tune GPS orientation information via dynamic TrackingLayer, and carries out an amount of experiments with favorable results.
