The hardiness, growth, cultivation techniques and the relationship between wood property and utilization demand of introduced poplar cultivars and native poplar species were analyzed according to the experiments and investigations in 15 forest farms located in 11 counties in Changbai mountain area. Populus ussuriensis, P. koreana and P. davidiana (including P. davidiana var macrophylla Zhang) were confirmed as the proper native species suitable to be utilized in comercial timber production, as they are stable grew in the area with hardiness and high timber establishment. 'P. Xhcixiao cv Yingchun Poplar 5' grews fast but with slightly cold damage. P. X curamericana cv robusta, P. Bailin-2 (P. simonii x P. nigra), P. X beijingensis and P. Xeuramercana cv. serotina grows well with certain hardiness when planted on plain land, ginseng planted land and land along with river. The key techniques for planting the selected cultivars as large-sized timber species and short-rotation timber species were established according to their utilization.
