The anatomical, physics and chemical characteristics of 10 main species of bamboo in Hubei province were studied in this paper, and comprehensive appraisals to their papermaking performance were carried out. The timber characteristics in different growth period of Phyllostachys pubescence were also researched. The results are as follows:The structure of growing point of bamboo shoot is a typical structure of tunica-corpus, and the primordias of sheath and axillary bud come from the base of the growing point, and develope the sheell and axillary bud of bamboo shoot gradually by growing outward. The bamboo shoot remains vigorous division ability in growing point in the course of development, and the form doesn't change either. Inferior top is divided into marrow meristem area and circumambience meristem area, marrow meristem area then evolves into marrow by cell apoptosis, and circumambience meristem area evolves into epidermis, cortex , interior cortex and vascular bundle distributing in ground tissue, and develope into a stalk wall finally; cambium in circumambience meristem area crooked to marrow, and developes into partition vascular bundle. While the development of the bamboo shoot becomeing the bamboo , mediacy meristem keep vigorous ability and by the lasting horizontal division, promoting the high growth of the plant, until the tender bamboo takes shape.The mean value of fibre length(FL), fibre width(FW) and fibre length-width ratio(FL/FW) is 2.08mm, 16.38 m and 128.17 respectively in tender culm of Ph. Pubescence.With the bamboo age increasing,there is a faint increase about FL, FW and FL/FW, and then tend towards stability gradually. There is no remarkable difference in FL, FW and FL/FW between bamboo woods with different age . The mean value of fibre double wall thickness(FDWT) , fiber dimeter (FD), and fibre double wall thickness-fiber dimeter ratio(FDWT/FD) is 14.02 urn , 2.89 urn and 7.01 respectively. FDWT and FDWT/FD increases with the growing of bamboo, while FD decreases. There is remarkable difference in FDWT and very remarkable difference in FDWT/FD and FD, between the bamboo woods with different age .The mean value of FL, FW and FL/FW is 2.06mm, 16.96 urn and 126.95 respectively in mature period of Ph. Pubescence, and the difference in FL, FW and FL/FW between the bamboo woods with different age is not remarkable. The mean value of FDWT, FD, and FDWT/FD is 15.22 urn , 1.72 urn and 10.45 respectively, and with the age increasing, FD shows a tendency to reduce, while FDWT/FD show a tendency to increase faintly. Fibre of different age doesn't show remarkable difference in FDWT and FD, but show remarkable difference in FDWT/FD.Radial variation of fibre form of ripe Ph. Pubescence is: the middle part of the fibre length is the longest , the inside and outside are relatively short. The width of fibre shows a tendency to increase outwards inside. As length-width ratio is concerned, middle part is the most heavy, inside take the second place, and outside is minimum. The outside of FDWT is the heaviest, the inside and middle part are relatively small. FDWT/FD increases gradually outwards insideAxial variation of fibre form of ripe Ph. Pubescence is as follows: It is the longest in the middle part of the fibre length , the underpart and top are relatively short, and the fibre is the widest for top in width , the underpart takes second place, the middle part is minimum . The middle part is the most heavy in FL/FW, underpart takes second place, top is minimum. As to FDWT, top is the biggest, the underpart and middle part are relatively small. FD of fibre shows a tendency to increase from bottom to top, the difference between middle part and top are not distinct. FDWT/FD of fibre shows a tendency to increase from bottom to top. Except FL reaches the significance difference, other index like, FW, FL/FW, FDWT, FD, and FDWT/FD are not remarkable.The fibre length of 10 species of bamboo timber is between 1.98mm and 2.89mm, the average is 2.22mm, and it belongs to long fibre.
