The six winemaking varieties (Pinot Noir, Merlot, Carignane, Red Carignane, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet France ) were introduced to Zhangye prefecture, Gansu province. Systemative observe on the botany characteristic of the variety, agronomical characteristic, cold-resistance, berry quality have been done during 2000 to 2003,in order to find out the fine winemaking varieties and varieties association suitable for local development, and offer certain theoretical foundation for winemaking and building viniyard in this area. The final result of study shows:1 Cultivars studied matured later with more green berries, Carignane and Red Carignane were easy to hurt by early frost, The maturity time was not same.2 Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon showed middle vigor growth and the production in this area, Carignane and Red Carignane also showed middle vigor growth, but the production of which was higher. The vigor of growth of Merlot was middle, and the production was higher.3 Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir were more resistance to chilly.4 The contents acidity of all the varieties were higher, and the contents of sugar were lower in this area. But the contents of sugar of Merlot, Pinot Noir, Carignane were higher, the contents of acidity were lower with better quality for winemaking among these six varieties.5 Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon were more suitable to culture, Cabernet Franc was also suitable.
