Physical and mechanical properties of 1-72 Poplar plantation wood had been comprehensively researched using non-destructive testing methods. This study will provide scientific base and quantitative target for selecting proper non-destructive testing methods to evaluate wood properties of poplar plantation rightly and quickly, and it will contribute to selecting, planting and effective using of poplar plantation.Wood density had been studied by means of relationship between Pilodyn penetration and basic density of the increment core and consistency between drill resistance profiles and X-ray density charts. The result shows:â‘ Pilodyn tester showed that it was useful in determining density of 1-72 poplar, but it only can be used to evaluate the density of outerwood.â‘¡Moisture content has a strong effect on the result of drill resistance profiles. There is not a strong consistency between drill resistance profiles and X-ray density charts, the resistograph had the limitation in evaluating wood density.Wood properties of log and small samples before and after air-drying had been evaluated using stress wave (FAKOPP), ultrasonic wave (PUNDIT) and Resonant Frequency Vibration(FFT analyzer). Dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOE) at three different moisture contents had been studied. The changes of dynamic MOE and wood mechanical properties at different heights, directions and positions had been analysed. Relationships between dynamic MOE and wood mechanical properties were studied. Research results are summed up as follows:â‘ There was difference among different non-destructive testing methods, but significant relationships were evident among them.â‘¡Moisture content had a significant effect on the results of stress wave(FAKOPP) and ultrasonic wave(PUNDIT), with the decrease of moisture content, dynamic MOE wasmore increasing. But significant relationships were evident between dynamic MOE at different moisture contents. While it had no significant effect on Resonant Frequency Vibration(FFT analyzer). Different distances had no significant effect on dynamic MOE by stress wave techique(FAKOPP).(3)The changes of dynamic MOE and wood mechanical properties at different heights, directions and positions were consistent. Stress wave methods (FAKOPP) had an advantage in the evaluation of log. Resonant Frequency Vibration (FFT analyzer) provided an indication of the potential for wood properties evaluation of small samples before air-drying. While ultrasonic wave (PUNDIT) only gained an advantage over other two methods in the evaluation of air-dried samples.[Fig.32, Tab.30, Ref.89, For. 15]...
