The expressway has become one of the most important infrastructures in one country as economy develops. How do we deal with the relationship between environment and expressway is a key problem because the expressway is a huge artificiality which must be effected on its surrounding environment under construction. Today, the greening has be considered one of main respects among expressway.This paper discusses the greening of Ning-Hang (Jiangsu section) expressway with vegetation ecology method from species composition and communities structure, which including road greening, interchange greening and service area greening. It applies vegetation ecology methods such as community species composition, community quantitative features, community life-form spectrum, community species diversity and community similarity coefficient etc. and the theory of landscape ecology to study the communities.First, investigating the information of environment surrounding Ning-Hang expressway and collecting data where the expressway passed areas of climate, soil and geography and so on and then studying and estimating the road greening of 5 typical sections (K2+600—K3+560, K40+20—K40+980, K50+200—51+175, K51+175—52+125 and K60+600—61+575) with the method of vegetation ecology which are according to arborous layer and shrub layer. There are more than 30 species in all 5 sections. The order of life-form spectrum is: Ph.>H.>T.>Cr.>Ch.. The heterogeneity of 5 sections is too low, which the highest similarity coefficient is 92.3%. The same as density of arborous, the highest density is only 3.42 /100m2. On ecological function, the typical section 5 is better than the other 4. Base on these, suggesting some advice according to primary phytocoenosiumtype to improve on the original typical sections' road greening plan.Second, studying and estimating the greening of interchanges (Lishui-east and Xushe interchange) and service areas (Tianmuhu and Taihu service area) as the same method of typical sections. There are 9±6 species in arborous layers and 11±2 in shrub layers. On ecological function, the interchanges are better than service areas. Besides, study on landscape architecture of interchanges and service areas.Final, this paper sums up the actual information of greening of Ning-Hang expressway and illustrates several disadvantage of all kind of greening types by comparing data. It shows that there are many same species in all kinds of communities; the number of garden plant is more than native plant; the life-form spectrum is unreasonable; the species diversity of communities and landscape heterogeneity are too low etc.The innovations of this paper are: first, it connects theory of vegetation ecology with greening of expressway; second, it quantitation analyses all kinds of types of communities, and then shows their advantages and disadvantages; third, it shows the importance and meaning of native plants in greening of expressway through data.The paper is good sample that studies and estimates the greening of expressway with the vegetation ecology theory and method, which connects beautification with ecological protection on the field of greening of expressway. Quantitative analyses is one of the development respects of vegetation ecology.
