| Chinese White Poplar(Populus tomentosa Carr.)is one of main species for afforestation and planting high-yielding forest in Shan Dong Plain Area, and it can be the ideal species for realizing oriental cultivation and development of industrial timber. Through the investigation of more than 20 clones in some main economical properties such as growth characters, ecological adaptability, the indicators of trunk form and quality, the abilities of clone propagation, the resistances to pests, diseases and other natural disasters, wood characters and the performances of industrial processing and utilization, under the principles of favored tree for suitable land, oriental cultivation, variety compose and good quality, high yield and benefits, the author suggested some excellent clones for extension in the Middle Locations of Shan Dong Province, the Southwest Locations of Shan Dong Province, the Northwest Locations of Shan Dong Province, and the Coastal region of Shan Dong Province respectively.Results investigated indicated that: (1) the trunk form can vary between 20 clones. Among them, HeBei has better trunk satiation; (2) the branching of 20 clones of Chinese White Poplar and hybrib Poplar is stlatimying, and there is a direct collelation between the distance of each annulus laternl bran ches and the annual growth of tree height. Among 20 clones, the branching angle of NL Poplar ×(P. tomentosa ×P. bolleana) and Guan Mao 54 is the least; HeBei, Lu Mao 50 and Xipi hnvee the thin blanches, and theil truak are relatively straight and satietying; Zhaiguan 3, 4, 5, 6 have better perfolmances in several main indicators involving trunk form and quality; (3) the afforestation survival rate of some clones is higher than 85%, like Yixian, 39, 38, 9803, 001, NL Poplar×(P.tomentosa × P.bolleana), T18, Zhaiguan 1, Zhaiguan 3, Zhaiguan 4, Zhaiguan 6 and Baotou; (4) the order of the spring shoot growth in the first year after afforestation is as follows: lu Mao 50>Yixian female tree>Xipi>Jiangan>Guan Mao 54>NLPoplar×(P. tomentosa×P. boppeana)>38>39>BL96>Yixian male tree>9803 > 001; (5) there exist significant differences in stress resistance. Among 20 cloner, Yixian, NL Poplar X (P. tomentosa XP. bolleana), lu Mao 50 Have better resistance to cold and drought; Yixian female tree, Lu Mao 50, Guan Mao, NL Poplar X (P. Tomentosa XP. bolleana), Zhaiguan 1 have better resistance to Apripona germari; Yixian has the best resistance to Canker (Cytospora chrysosperma), and its infection is less than 5%; (6) the fiber length of 20 clones is greater than 1.1 mm, the middle rank of fiber length. According to this character, we can think that the pulp and paper making property in Poplar is better than it in Black Poplar, but the yield and cellulose content(%) of the former is less than the latter; (7) by analyzing the aggregative indicators, the relatively suitble clones for extension and application are recommended for diffrernt cultivated zones in near future. In the Northwest Locations of Shan Dong Province and the Zhaiguan 3, Zhaiguan 5, Zhaiguan 6and NLPoplarXfi* Tomentosa XP. bolleana) are suitable; In the Southwest Locations of SHAN Dong Province, Yixian femaletrees, Lu Mao 50, Zhaiguan 3 and 39 are suitable; In the South Locations of Shan Dong Province, Yixian female trees, Lu Mao 50, Zhaiguan 3, and NL Poplar X (P. Tomentosa XP. bolleana) are suitable; In the Coastal region of Shan Dong province, Yixian female trees, Lu Mao 50, Zhaiguan 3 are suitable.
