Thanks to the fast-growing and good quality, the forest industry in China has shown a particular interest in planting triploid white poplar for pulpwood and other industrial wood production. It is valuable for clone identification to purify triploid poplar clones and protect new varieties. In this paper, clone indentification was carrid out for 21 triploid white poplar clones based on morphological defferences and DNA fingerprinting map. The main results are as follows:(1) According to the differences in leaf morphological characteristics among 21 triploid clones, a preliminary method to identify all studied triploid clones was proposed by leaf shape characteristics, such as leaf tip, leaf-base shape, leaf margin toothed shape, angle between the main vein and leaf-base lateral veins, shape of lenticels and its distribution in the nursey.(2) 410 bands were derived from 7 pairs of primer combinations, the average amplified bands were 58.6 in each pair of primer combinations. Among the 410 bands, there were 145 polymorphic bands, and the average was 20.7 for polymorphic bands. What's more, among the 7 pairs of primer combinations, the primer combinantions, M-ACT/E-CTC, were of the highest proportion of polymorphism and polymorphism up to 42.6%. However, the primer combinantions, M-CAG/E-CAT, were of the lowest proportion of polymorphism, and polymorphism only reaching 28.6%.(3) 4 pairs of primer combinations, M-CTA/E-CAG, M-CAC/E-CCA, M-ACT/E-CTC and M-CTT/E-CTG, were screened out of 64 pairs of primer combinations. DNA fingerprinting map with 21 amplified polymorphic bands was successfully constructed for 21 triploid white poplar clones. And then,21 triploid hybrid poplar clones could be accurately identified.
