By analyzing expert knowledge and field experiment results on alfalfa, with the software engineering and expert system technologies, an expert system for alfalfa cultivation and management is designed and researched systematically. The system is constructed on PAID4.0 platform with Visual Basic 6.0. SQL Server is used for the back-end database, and InterDev, Asp and HTML language are also used in the developing process. The expert system can be reached through Internet. Dement is sent from browsers, and decision is made by servers and sent to the browsers. The system can be reached by multi-users simultaneously through Internet. The design and implementation of an expert system for alfalfa cultivation and management are based on the surrongings, the soils and the climate in Beijing. And the cules of the study are selection of suitable species and suitable period of cultivation, decision functions of irrigation, decision functions of using fertilizer, diagnose and control of symptoms, forecast of harvest period and quality evaluation of forage products. An algorithm of knowledge Discovery in Database, knowledge check and knowledge reduction algorithm are designed and implemented in the construction of the construction of the Expert System. Sixteen decision functions can be realized by the system. This system is comprised two parts: Expert Management System(EMS) and Browse System(BS). That is, 1. EMS includes six parts. (1)Selection of suitable species and suitable period of cultivation. (2)Decision functions of irrigation, including of the irrigation modes, the amount of irrigation, the forecast model of output and irrigation modes. (3) Decision functions of using fertilizer, including of the model of yield and fertilizer, the diagnose of short of fertilizer. (4)Diagnose and control of symptoms, including of diseases, pests and weeds. (5)Forecast of harvest period, including of hay concoct and silage in rainy season. (6)Quality evaluation of forage products, including of hay, grass meal, bale and sack loader, grass grains. 2. BS provides for the users some knowledge on the plant technologies and biology traits of alfalfa through the forms of HTML and MPG. Users can choose any of the functions according to their demands and conditions. The system provides guideline and can be used easily. This module can directly conduct users production management of alfalfa. Tested with the field datas from Beijing Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, the system runs well and the result is reasonable.
