Rhus typhina L, a deciduous shrub or small tree species, originally from North America, is cultivated throughout many countries in Europe, Asia, Oceania and other areas. It was first introduced into China in 1959 and has been extended to many provinces in the North, Northwest and Northeast of China. Cold resistant, drought tolerant and alkaline resistant, Rhus typhina has become well adapted to a wide environmental condition, a good species for holding soil and sand and ornamental horticulture. Its bark and leaf contain rich tannin, fruits can be extracted for edible pigment and its seeds contain wax or tallow for industrial purpose. This paper reviewed the holistic development and research progress through literature collection and analysis as well as categorization. Four factors influencing the development of Rhus typhina have been identified as follows: â‘ its strong competitiveness and diffusion having influenced the regional biodiversity; â‘¡poor-shaped stem and slowing the growth; â‘¢limited utilization for other purposes; and â‘£partially consideration of it as harmful exotic biological species. Based on the development of present forestry and demand for the ecological construction of forestry, future trend for research and utilization of Rhus typhina was developed as follows: Theoretical research effort should be concentrated on â‘ physiological and ecological study on the harsh tolerant mechanism of Rhus typhina; â‘¡the role of Rhus typhina in the soil and water conservation, water resources holding, wind prevention and sand control, as well as soil improvement ; and â‘¢Rhus typhina's population succession and regulative mechanism. Technical research effort should be focused on â‘ regulative techniques of Rhus typhina;â‘¡new variety development; â‘¢restoration of degraded vegetation; and â‘£critical techniques of forestation in the desert region. Utilization and development effort should center around â‘ effective extraction, separation, purification and further processing of tannin and pigment; â‘¡further study on value-added processing of tannin extract of Rhus typhina; â‘¢study on the roots and bark for medicinal purpose; â‘£technology in extraction of raw material from seeds of Rhus typhina for industrial use. Meanwhile, some rational suggestions for rapid development of Rhus typhina were put forward as follows: â‘ properly recognizing exotic tree species;â‘¡accurately defining the meaning of exotic species; â‘¢further strengthening the research on the development and utilization of Rhus typhina both theoretically and technologically.
