Urban forest is an important component to urban ecosystem. Based on ecological investigating method, the vegetation composition and structure of campus in Nanjing Forest University was investigated as an urban forest. We conducted an investigation of forest communities with 20m×20m investigated plots in various district of the campus. Results revealed that 91 families, 245 genuses, 603 species were recorded in these study plots. Compared with the investigation in 1952, 1976, 1982, the species were decreasing sharply in campus at Nanjing Forest University (NFU). The secondary forests at NFU were deciduous broad-leaved trees and evergreen forest mixed with deciduous broad-leaved trees. Generated species on understory were obvious in natural secondary forests. There were less species and simple structure in the plantation and the road greenbelt. Species richness, species diversity index of various communities were discussed. They were relative to site conditions , seed sources and human disturbance .Species diversity index for different stratum of forests in NFU was in the order: herb stratum > shrub stratum >tree stratum. The diameter ranges of the trees were between 8 and 24cm in the campus. The dominant species were Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu et Cheng,Taxodium ascendens Brongn,Liriodendron Chinese X L tulipifera, P. canadensis, Cinnamomum camphora(L. )Presl, Cupressusfunebris Endl^ Firmiana simplex(L )W. F. Wight -. Camptotheca acuminate Decne^ S. chinensis cv.Kaizuca^ Quercus acutiserrata Maxim. Based on the geographic condition, human character, plant source and the development trend of NFU, the strategies are proposed as follows:(1) to enrich the species diversity,(2) to refine the function of campus forest and integrate the ecosystem,(3) to connect the Greenland in the campus,(4) to exert the function of the community, keep ecosystem health,(5) to keep campus forest accord with urban forest, and(6) to establish high-qualitied manage system.
