The research was carried out at the serious erosion area, located in Changting county , Fujian Province. Different control practices were applied on the serious erosion area, including the mixed forests of multi-tree species (MFMTS), whole hillside coverage with Bahiagrass(WHCB), ditches with grass block(DGB), closing of hillsides and management to facilitate afforestation (CHMFA) , orchard with terrace and grass cover(OTGC). The objectives of this paper were to assess the impacts of different practices on soil quality, and probe into the relationship between different control practices and soil properties (including physical, chemical and biological properties). The results showed that the control practices can significantly promote the soil chemical properties of soil organic matter, total N, available N , available P, available K, especially WHCB; the effect of DGB and OTGC is the worst in improving soil chemical conditions. Soil physical properties of non-capillary porosity, stable infiltration rate, maximum water-holding capacity, state and degree of soil particle aggregation, dispersion ratio are significantly different between the treatments; the effect of the control measures on soil physical properties appears in the sequence of MFMTS > DGB, OTGC > WHCB , CHMFA. The study also found that soil biological parameters, such as microorganism C and N, fungi, bacterium, actinomyces, are significantly different between the treatments and CK. The improvement of the various practices on soil biological properties is in the order of WHCB >MFMTS> CHMFA>DGB>OTGC. The comprehensive appraisal result shows: MFMTS is the best practice and OTGC is the relatively poor...
