Sugarcane is the most important sugar crop in China or in the world. Cane sugar yield amounts to more than 90% of sugar yield in China and to 65% in the world. With the population explosion and environment worsening such as soil desertification, the food safety becomes eminent day by day. Therefore sugarcane planting area had to make room for food crops and be moved to relatively arid field even drought sloping field from fertile field. It makes sugarcane breeding focus on the release of drought resistant and high rooting ability plants. In order to overcome the obstacles such as narrow genetic base and low drought resistant in the sugarcane breeding, we united the Key Laboratory of Eco-physiology & Genetics Improvement for Sugarcane, Ministry of Agriculture (Fuzhou) with Sugarcane Institute of Fujian Province Academy of Agriculture Science (Zhangzhou) to screen drought resistant germplasm resource to provide new materials for the sugarcane drought resistance breeding. The main results of this study were as follows:1. Seventy-five clones tested were selected from the clones used in the phylogenesis research and commonly used parents and their offspring, from which nine highly drought resistant clones had been selected. The clones are Jiangxi Zhuzhe, NCo310, ROC5, Guill, Gui96-44, Funong81-745, Hainan92-105, Ya90-33 and Fujian E.arundinaceus(Retz) Jeswiet.2. Nine clones tested including Saccharum L, E.arundinaceus (Retz ) Jeswiet and their offspring were identified with droughtresistance. 4 drought resistant clones are Hainan92-105, Ya92-77, Ya96-66 and Fujian E.arundinaceus (Retz) Jeswiet.
