In recent years, the increasing rate of crop yield was slowed down in China, mainly because of the damage caused by pests. Moreover, most farmers didn't known the occurrence and development rules about crop pests, so that the key periods for controlling pests could not be grasped. Although pesticides were used widely, the control effects were not satisfying and serious environment pollution and economic loss were caused at the same time. In order to manage crop pests in an accurate and scientific way, a real-time monitoring and forecasting system was established for main crop pests around China.The system based on internet was established for main crop pests around China, according to knowledge of the plant protection, expert experience, and utilizing artificial intelligence, Geographical information system (Gsysteml) which was developed by authors and decision support system (DSS) technology. The system could provide the real-time information on occurrence of pests in 6 kinds of crops of China as well as diagnosing, providing knowledge and forecasting for some important crop pests. It also had the function of comparing the status of every pest during the same period in different years. By this system, data information can be transformed into a geographical information map, and farmers can see the distribution of pests, so that control pests by in a more scientific way.The system is composed of 7 subsystems: database management, monitoring and forecasting in the real-time, forecasting, diagnosing, knowledge of pests, the service of weather and message board. The database can be added, cancelled and rectified at any time at any place through internet. More than 60 pests of wheat, corn, rice, potato, sorghum and millet can be monitored in real-time, data information can be transformed into a geographical information map, and moreover, different colors stand for different damage levels. In addition, data information can be gathered and showed by the way of statistic reports and figures by the system. By comparison from the different years, the changes and spreading trend of pests can be estimated to guide farmers to manage crop pests more quickly and scientifically. The system could provide short-term forecasting decision for nine kinds of important pests, including powdery mildew, sharp eyespot and scab of wheat, rice blast, rice fasle smut, potato late blight, aphids, grain gall midge of wheat and cornborer based on crop resistance, primary level of pests and short-term weather forecast, which can help farmers to control pests in advance. More than 60 pests of 6 kinds of crops can be diagnosed through diagnosing subsystem. There are 2 diagnosing modes, including searching mode and picture mode, and 2 modes complement each other. Knowledge of over 60 pests can be searched in the knowledge searching subsystem. In the weather subsystem a large capability of database is remained in order to add weather data at the possible time. Furthermore, 4 authorized weather nets are linked for getting weather data. The design of message board makes communication more convenient.The system is operated easily. Now it had been linked to Plant Protection Information Exchange Net (www. ppien.com). It performed very well in the internet and reached the aim of program design.
