Three hundreds and forty-six isolates of Puccinia triticina were obtained from wheat leaf rust collections made by cooperators throughout China from 1981 to 2004. Physiologic races and pathogenic genes from virulence/avirulence phenotypes on 44 lines that are Near-isogenic for leaf rust resistance were analyzed. In Hebei province, the main phenotypes frequency of wheat leaf rust have changed. Main phenotypes become secondary and secondary ones become main. The variance of wheat leaf rust phenotypes had been detected, so as the virulence gene of wheat leaf rust. The virulence frequency of V2a, V9, V24, V19, V38, V41, V42, V43 and V46 were lower than 30% and no V19, V38 and V46 was detected in the test in 1981 ~ 1982, 2001, 2002 and 2003~2004 in Hebei province. They can be well used recent years and in future.. But in China, the virulence frequency of V2a, V9, V24, V3a, V19, V38, V39, V40, V41, V42, V43 and V46 were lower than 30%, the resistance genes Lr2a, Lr9, Lr24, Lr3a, Lrl9, Lr38, Lr39, Lr40, Lr41, Lr42, Lr43 and Lr46 can be well used. The difference of wheat leaf rust phenotypes and virulence frequency are obvious among Yunnan, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Sichuan and Guizhou province in 2003 ~ 2004. The virulence genes of wheat leaf rust from different areas are dissimilar. The virulence and the areas have correlation in a certain extent.
