The responses of physical and anatomical characteristics to the climatic factors change of Mongolian Scotch pine wood which located in the Northeast of China were investigated. The mean air temperature, mean ground temperature, heightest and lowest ground temperature, precipitation and sunshine percentage during 1975 to 2003 were analyzed in this study. First, the wood properties of different site conditions were analyzed by variance analysis. The radial directional variation rules were studied separately to the radial directional variation difference remarkable wood properties, and the tendency return models of wood properties radial directional variation were established. Second, the wood properties were standardized by rejected the influences of growth-tendency and the silviculture. Third, the responses of physical and anatomical characteristics of planted Scotch pine wood to the climatic factors change were analyzed by simple correlation. Finally, the regress models between wood property indexes and the climatic factors were established by response function analysis, the responses to the change of several climatic factors of wood property indexes in seventeen principal components which extracted through the principal components analysis were studied, also put for ward the proposal to the directed breeding of plantation forest. The property indexes of physical and anatomical characteristics of planted Scotch pine in different aspects have significant difference in the radial directional variation, such as the growth ring width, the earlywood width, the latewood width, the growth ring density, the earlywood density, the latewood density, the earlywood tracheid length, earlywood tracheid wall thickness, latewood tracheid wall thickness, the earlywood tracheid radial diameter, the latewood tracheid radial diameter, the latewood cell wall percentage, the earlywood wall/lumen, the latewood wall/lumen and the resin canal percentage. The property indexes of physical and anatomical characteristics of planted Scotch pine in different slopes have significant difference in the radial directional variation, such as latewood proportion, the latewood tracheid length, and the earlywood tracheid radial diameter. The growth rate and the earlywood wall/lumen of radial directional variation were not remarkable to the different exposures and different positions of planted Scotch pine. The responses of physical and anatomical characteristics to single climatic factors changes were analyzed by partial correlation analysis, and the significance situation of the response of each wood property indexes to the different month of climatic factors changes were obtained. The temperature during the dormant period form October the year before to the February this year had the significant relations to the wood physical and anatomical characteristics. Precipitation and the sunshine percentage have significant relations to the wood physicalcharacteristics. The early growing season from March to May the trees growth slow, and the temperature, precipitation, the sunshine percentage have significant relations to the wood anatomical characteristics. From June to August the trees grew fast, the temperature has relation to the physical and anatomical characteristics significantly, the precipitation has remarkable relation to wood physical characteristics, the sunshine percentage has remarkable relation to wood anatomical characteristics. In September the late period of growth season, the temperature and the sunshine percentage have remarkable relations to the physical and anatomical characteristics, the relations between the precipitation and the wood physical and anatomical characteristics were not remarkable. The responses between wood physical and anatomical characteristics and multiple climatic factors changes were analyzed by response function method. The main promotion factor and the inhibiting factor of each wood property index in different growth periods were obtained. In the early growth season the temperature and the sunshine percentage were the main promotion factors to the growth, the promoteraction of precipitation to the growth is weak because of the inhibitory actions of the temperature and the sunshine percentage displays. During the period of late growth season, the promoter functions of the climatic factors are closed;the promoter action of temperature is prominent to the tracheid length and the wall/lumen butcher wall rate. The results of this article will provide a scientific basis for quality prediction and directive breeding of plantations forest of Mongolian Scotch pine.
