Studies On The Effects Of Ethephon On Sugarcane Shoot Apical Meristem Cytology And Physiology

Three sugarcane varieties YT86/368, ROC 16 and CP80/1827 with different stem diameter were employed as the plant materials for the experiments. Three concentrations of ethephon , 0mg/L, 100mg/L and 400mg/L, were sprayed on the plant leaves at the elongate stage. The purpose of study is to investigate the effect of ethephon on some cytological, physiological and biochemical characters of sugarcane shoot apical meristem. The main results were showed as follows:1. 100mg/L ethephon treatment could boots the growth and differentiation of shoot apical meristem. The effects on thin stem variety were greater than those of the middle and thick stem varieties. 400mg/L ethephon treatment showed an inhibiting effect on the total number of cells, cell division rate, width of shoot apical meristem.2. 100mg/L ethephon treatment could hasten the 3rd young leaf base meristem total number of cells, cell division rate, as well as cell width, cell length and cell area.
