Based on literature about carbon emission, this study which combined the flammability, combustion, carbon content rate of fuels and the data of experiment and forest fires analyzes carbon and carbon-containing gas released from shrubs, herbages and litter of forest fire in Daxing'anling region of Heilongjiang Province from 1980 to 1999.1. The results showed there are of great difference among understory vegetations and litter in the unit biomass and carbon content. The biomass and carbon storage of Rhododendron Larix gmelini forest is 28 220.60 kg · hm-2 and 10 182.05 kg · hm-2 respectively, but Blueberry Larix gmelini forest is 12 671.55 kg · hm-2 and 5 006.26 kg · hm-2 respectively.2. The amounts of carbon-containing gas emission from understory vegetations and litter are different. The carbon-containing gas of Rhododendron Larix gmelini forest is 33 986.62 kg · hm-2, but blueberry Larix gmelini forest is 16 857.72 kg · hm-2.3. The average transformation rate of biomass and carbon storage of understory vegetations and litter of cold temperate forest in China is 0.38. The emission factors of CO2, CO and CXHY is 2.8613 > 0.4772 and 0.0202 respectively in Daxing'an Mountain.4. In Daxing'anling of Heilongjiang Province, the forest fires mainly took place in central and southeast section in springtime, and the burned area of most forest fires is lower than 100 hm2.5. The results indicated that in the past 20 years, the total carbon emission from understory vegetations and litter of Daxing'anling forest fires accounted 6 558 382.31 t and 327 919.12 t · yr-1 , which was about 16.20% of total national emissions from forest fires. Among 7 forest types, Larix gmelini forest and Pinus sylvestris forest have the largest and the least carbon contribution of understory vegetations and litter, the numbers are respectively 3 715 604.08 t and 302 330.74 t. The amount of CO2, CO and CXHY emission from understory vegetations and litter were 938 265.78 t · yr-1, 156 491.06 t · yr-1 and 6 614.32 t · yr-1 respectively, and the annual emissions of CO2 and CO were respectively 10.47% and 13.97% of national emissions from forest fires, and 0.03% and 0.07% of global emissions from forest fires.
