Objective: in order to improve the toughness of glass ionomer cement (GIC), ZrO2, CeO2and TiO2were added to the glass ionomer cement (referred to GIC-ZCT), according to themass ratio of glass ionomer cement,0.75%and1.25%of nano-cellulose whiskers (NCW) wereadded to examine the toughness improvement. Methods: certain proportions of silica, aluminum oxide, calcium fluoride, aluminumphosphate, sodium aluminum fluoride, zirconium oxide, cerium oxide, titanium oxide weremixed, then blended and then placed in an alumina crucible in1400℃for2hours, after thatwas cooled by placing it into water, then crushed and grinded, over200mesh sieve to obtainnew glass ionomer cement powder material.0.75%and1.25%nano-cellulose whiskercomposites were added to the GIC-ZCT. Flexural strength, adhesive strength and hardness werethen measured for the new mixture. The mixture was immersed in saliva for30days, thenweighed by Paffenbarger method, the material’s solubility and surface morphology wasobserved by SEM, results were analyzed using SPSS17.0univariate analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA), and comparison between the groups was carried out by using LSD test, testlevel α=0.05.Results: for the new mixture (GIC-ZCT NCW), the binding strength, hardness andbonding strength were improved (P <0.05), when1.25%wt NCW was added, it has shown toimprove the mechanical properties more than the0.75%, but increased the mixture’s dissolutionrate (P <0.05).The addition of nano-cellulose whisker to GIC-ZCT has improved themechanical properties, but inversely influenced the solubility of the mixture, but still can meetthe required characteristics for oral clinical applications.
