Epilepsy is a clinical syndrome of brain dysfunction due to the excessive and abnormal discharges of cerebral neuron which is caused by a variety of reasons. It’s characterized by Repeatability, seizure and transient. Clinical manifestations varied, longer course and difficult to cure are also the characteristics. Frequent recurrent seizures can cause the cerebral neuron necrosis or pathological apoptosis, which will lead to persistent change of the brain, then affect cognition, psychology and social functions. Therefore epilepsy patients are very upset. For epilepsy, there is no complete cure so far, even western medicine like antiepileptic drugs can be used to control part of the patients, but its side effects are very obvious which have large negative impact on patients’behavior and cognitive function. But traditional Chinese medicine has much importance on the treatment of epilepsy because of its safety, high efficiency and little side effects. The understanding of epilepsy in traditional Chinese medicine has been thousands of years. Due to its varied clinical manifestations, epilepsy is considered to be difficult and miscellaneous diseases since ancient times. The ancient Chinese physicians’understandings and expositions of the epilepsy have their own characteristics, and it has been debated since the ancient. The first part of literature review traced the ancient names of epilepsy according to the time sequence of past dynasties and summarize the etiology and pathology of the disease according to different ancient doctors’expositions. Along with the ancient doctors’ understanding of the epilepsy’s etiology and pathology progressing, the role of the wind and phlegm played in seizures had been payed more attention to, which produced the point of view "the epilepsy is because of the wind and sputum". This paper mainly summarizes different doctors’exposition about the wind, sputum and the epilepsy, also summarizes the Chinese herbal medicine used in the treatment of the epilepsy for the wind and sputum.Although modern medicine understandings of the pathogenesis and mechanism of epilepsy still has certain limitation, but the treatment of drug and non-drug measures is explored unceasingly. The second part of literature review summarizes the modern medicine understandings of the etiological factors and mechanism of the epilepsy, including some recent related studies. It also includes an overview of modern medical diagnosis and some current medications and non-drug treatments for the epilepsy. In the clinical study part, I collected Chinese medicine prescriptions of my tutor professor gen-ming zhang’s outpatients who were diagnosed as epilepsy during March 2013 to February 2015, then analyze the Chinese herbal medicine used in these prescriptions, to conclude the medication rule. Find out that expectorant drugs and calming liver wind are much more used, then discusses the teacher’ academic idea in treating epilepsy which is paying more attention to reducing phlegm and calming the wind. This paper discusses different doctors’ understanding of treating epilepsy using the Chinese herbal medicine from the wind and sputum, summarizes tutor’s Chinese medication rule in treating epilepsy and explores his academic idea in treating epilepsy to provide ideas for the clinical treatment of epilepsy, take the advantage of Chinese medicine in the treatment of epilepsy, improve the effect of the treatment of epilepsy and relieve the suffering of the patients with epilepsy.
