In recent ten years, the theory of syndrome-factors proposed in the field of TCM syndrome research has had a profound influence on the application of TCM treatment according to syndrome differentiation and TCM principle-method-recipe-medicines. Based on the syndrome-factors theory, our research group put forward the formula-factors concept. Besides,we combined the two theories and proposed the prescription compatibility principles of "correspondence between syndrome and formula factors" based on the syndrome differentiation and treatment principles "correspondence between syndrome and formula".These achievements in scientific research are beneficial to the development of TCM prescription compatibility theory as well as the improvement of TCM clinical practice ability.Treatise on Febrile Disease is one of classic works in TCM and is honored as the ancestor of prescription.By analyzing the corresponding relationship between formula-factors and syndrome-factors of classical prescriptions from Treatise on Febrile Disease, and understanding compatibility of classical formulas is conducive to guiding selection and composition of classical prescription in clinical practice. The thesis makes a systematic study on decoction of Treatise on Febrile Disease and its derived prescriptions from the perspective of "correspondence between syndrome and formula factors", and summarises their evolving regulations, so as to master the compatibility rules of classical prescriptions, expand their range of application, improve the ability of selecting reasonable classical prescriptions and creating new prescriptions. The thesis can be divided into four parts as follows:The first part of the paper can not be ignored. The first part is a literature review which mainly outlines the research status of the theory of syndrome-factors and formula-factors.The literature review consists of two sections:One section reviews the research progress of the syndrome-factors theory including the formation of the syndrome-factors, the extraction and mining method of the syndrome-factors, and the syndrome-factors distribution of clinical disease. Research of the syndrome-factors theory is thought to be necessary, because it can simplify the syndrome, thus improving the level of treatment based on syndrome differentiation. The other gives an overview of the origin and the connotation of the formula-factors. Furthermore, the formula-factors is seen as more targeted for deciding on herbal medicines to compose a prescription in clinical practice by making a comparison between formula-factors, Fang Yuan (recipe-unit in classical prescription), Fang Gen(prescription-component corresponding symptoms in classical prescription),the prescription compatibility factors, and Yao Qun (Chinese material medica group), which all belong to the Chinese materia medica combination based on different Chinese materia medica theories. In conclusion, the proposal of formula-factors concept in the light of the syndrome-factors theory and the generation of "correspondence between syndrome and formula factors" thereafter are the thinking and development of TCM, which deserves further research. The second part mainly analyzes the basic connotation of "syndrome-factors", "formula-factors", and "correspondence between syndrome and formula factors". As pathogenesis unit and diagnostic element of TCM syndromes, syndrome-factors can reduce the dimension of TCM syndromes, and make the syndrome study more clearly and more simple. As the formula-factors concept is put forward according to the syndrome-factors theory, there is a corresponding relationship between them, therefore, the formula-factors has a strong targeting property. Founding on these concepts, the concept of "correspondence between syndrome and formula factors" is proposed. This concept emphasizes the interaction between recipe-unit of prescription (formula-factors) and its corresponding pathogenesis-unit of syndrome (syndrome-factors),which makes the prescription more targeted, and inspires the thought of the composition of prescription in clinical practice. The third part analyses the corresponding relationship between formula-factors and syndrome-factors of 112 classical formulas from Treatise on Febrile Disease. The finding shows that a large number of repeated prescription elements are found in the 112 classical formulas. These repeated formula-factors emphasis the same treatment for the common pathogenesis-unit of different syndromes. In this way, they are called excellent components or accessories of classical formulas, which lay a solid foundation for flexible change of classical formulas. The fourth part mainly discusses the evolutionary regularities of White Tiger Decoction (BaiH-u decoction),Major Qi Infusing Decoction(Dachengqi Decoction),Minor Decoction of Bupleurum(Xi-aoChaiHu Decoction), Decoction for Treating Yang Exhaustion(SiNi Decoction) and their derived p-rescriptions from the perspective of "correspondence between syndrome and formula factors".The c-onclusion doesn’t go beyond the general principle of "correspondence between syndrome and form-ula factors":the basic prescription is prepared for basic syndrome, and then adjusted formula-factor of basic prescription appeared with the evolution of basic syndrome pathogenesis, making the pres-cription treatment suitable for specific pathogenesis, thus forming a series of derived prescriptions.Based on the research mentioned above, a new principle related to deciding on herbal medicines to compose a formula in clinical practice can be put forward:when a TCM doctor treats a syndrome, first of all, he needs to determine the main pathogenesis of the syndrome by syndrome differentiation, then he can work on the treatment. If he can find some corresponding set prescription to cure this syndrome, just use one of them; if not,he can simplify the syndrome into syndrome-factors, and extract the corresponding formula-factors on account of the syndrome-factors from set prescriptions to create new formulas.
