Objective:The over-expression of RTN4 is reported in various kinds of human malignancies, and closely related with the development of cancer. We examined the association of the immunohistochemical RTN4 expression with clinicopathological variables and patient outcome, and to evaluate its prognostic value. Methods:Immunohistochemical SP method was used to detect the expression of RTN4 in 95 cases of gastric cancer tissues and 72 cases of adjacent carcinoma tissues. By Chi-square test we analyzed the relationship between RTN4 in gastric carcinoma and adjacent tissues as well as its expression and clinical data in gastric cancer. Finally, we used Cox proportional hazards survival analysis model followed univariate and multivariate analysis to assess its impact on prognosis.Results:1.RTN4 expression is overexpression in gastric cancer tissues(57.9%), and much lower levels of RTN4 expression were observed in adjacent cancer tissues(16.7%).2.High RTN4 were associated with advanced stages(P=0.0377) and different histology(P=0.0030). 3.Patients with high RTN4 had shorter survival time compared with those with low RTN4 expression(P=0.0119, log-rank test). High RTN4(hazard ratio, 1.961; 95% confidence interval, 1.134–3.392; P=0.0160) is an independent prognostic factor for overall survival of gastric cancer patients.Conclusion:1.RTN4 is over expressed in gastric cancer tissues and its expression is associated with stage and histological type, indicating that RTN4 can be used as a diagnostic marker of gastric cancer.2.RTN4 is an independent prognostic factors and more powerful predictor of poor outcome than other clinical characters.
