At present, a large number of studies focused on SAP (super absorbent polymer) or single foreign substances for the growth of seedlings and the role of soil improvement. Many studies centered on applying composite material of the main water-absorbent material in crops and fruit production. However, the related research on complex water-absorbent material in afforestation was not more. This paper discussed different proportion of the composite formulations of affecting on the growth and photosynthesis of seedlings to determine the optimal proportion based on difficult site, providing value reference information for afforestation in difficult site.Under the measurement of growth index and physiological index, Juglans regia, prunus armeniaca, Rpbinia pseudoacacia, poplar seedlings were studied to investigate application prospect of composite material to determine the optimal proportion of composite formulations on May to October in 2010. Took species, super absorbent polymer (SAP), polyaspartic acid (PASP), compound fertilizer and soil water content (SWC) as main factors, by orthogonal way combination formula, the four levels were set respectively. The results show the following conclusion:(1) Different proportion of the composite formulations are producing different degree of stimulative effect on leaves number, leaves areas, new shoots length, new shoots diameter and biomass of Juglans regia, prunus armeniaca, Rpbinia pseudoacacia, poplar seedlings. The best formulation in promoting growth index is poplar, SAP/X1g, PASP/Y3g, compound fertilizer/15g and SWC/12%. Overall, the growth of treatment of seedlings was better than the check.(2) The different treatments are effected on increasing Juglans regia, prunus armeniaca, Rpbinia pseudoacacia, poplar seedlings. They can also improve transpiration rates, level water potential, photosynthesis rates and SPAD value, reduce diffuse resistance. The most prominent formulation in promoting photosynthesis rates is Rpbinia pseudoacacia, SAP/X2g, PASP/Y2g, compound fertilizer/15g and SWC/15%. Overall, the physiology characteristics of treatment of seedlings were better than the check.(3) According to comprehensive analysis, the species is the primary factors, followed by SAP, and the third is SWC, the fourth is PASP, the fifth is compound fertilizer. The best formulation is Rpbinia pseudoacacia, SAP/X2g, PASP/Y2g, compound fertilizer/15g and SWC/15%.
