Researches in changes in forest carbon storage can provide a theoretical basis for work and projects related to sustainable forest management, ecological improvement and carbon sequestration. This paper studies forest carbon storage in Guyuan County, Hebei Province. Under 3S techniques, a remote sensing-based model for carbon storage is produced using the regression analysis, to retrieve the carbon storage of 2002 and 2007, analyze the spatio-temporal dynamics and establish forest biomass and carbon storage dynamic monitoring. The main content and results of this paper are as followed.(1) Use supervised classification to generate land use thematic maps in order to monitor the forest dynamics from the landscape scale. Results show that after the implementation of forest ecological projects, forest area in this region had increased greatly improved.(2) With a correlation analysis, produce a regression model of forest biomass and examine its accuracy. Results show that the model meets the requirements for remote sensing retrieval of biomass in this region and can be applied to estimation of forest biomass and carbon storage in this region.(3) Calculate carbon storage of 2002 and 2007 from the model to derive the dynamic characteristics of carbon storage of Guyuan County:As a result of forest ecological projects, forest carbon storage in 2007 was significantly higher, increased by 71.27% compared to 2002. The outcomes of forestry projects performed mostly and apparently on the original farmland, grassland and barren hills in central part. All results show that:in the researched region, the greatest impact on forest came from human activities while afforestation and fencing-off contributed to the significant increase in forest carbon storage.; implementation of forestry ecological projects played an active role in the productivity of forest ecosystems and achieved very good results in ecological environment improvement, wind break and sand break.
