With economic development and the improvement of people's livelihood, the demand of energy is bigger than any stage ever in human history. However, economic growth not only results in rapid consumption of energy, but also puts other negative impacts. Global warming, intense air pollution etc have been found to be direct outcomes of over consumption of fossil fuels. A worse status is that the humankind may face a fierce problem:the deficit of energy resulting from the delimitation of fossil reserve on earth. With the hiking of energy price which is a reasonable assumption when the deficit of energy happens, the pace of economic development will be lagged and the damage to global economy is unpredictable. In order to handle potential problems caused by increasing energy consumption, especially the over consumption of fossil fuels, renewable energy has gained much more concerns from scientists and politicians than ever before. Solar energy, terrestrial heat, nuclear power, wind power and biogas are among the highest ranks in the concerning list of renewable energy. Among clean energy sources, biogas receives excess attention. The reasons lie in the following aspects: the technologies of building and maintaining biogas are relatively easier; it can be applied in a broad region; none negative byproducts are generated from using of biogas, and more people are familiar with it now. This article elaborates the research on biogas in 4 parts.Firstly, the differences of biogas plants in developing countries and industrialized countries are illustrated including the size of biogas plants and the application purposes. In addition, based on the trend of biogas utility, the essay suggests that the developing countries should devote more resources to promote the technology in anaerobic technology in dealing with organic municipal waste.Secondly, a comparative study was conducted between Indian and China in use of biogas. India and China are the two biggest developing countries in the world. Meantime, they also possess the most advance household biogas construction technologies and rich experience of biogas use. The comparative research between the two countries indicates that the diverse of technology is resulting from the economic development condition, the level of craftsman's skill and the geographical location.Thirdly, the development of Chinese household biogas plants between 1999 and 2008 was analyzed based on survey and second hand data and information. A formula has been found to calculate the yield of biogas of its Green House Gas (GHG) emission reduction. Hence, their contribution to the GHG emission reduction in China has been calculated.Fourthly, the advantage and disadvantage factors in use and extension of biogas in Gansu province were discussed based on its geographical location, raw materials availability, economic situation and national policy. Finally,, the procedure of using "Clean Development Mechanism"(CDM) to trade Green House Gas Reduction on international markets and its risk has been proposed. It is concluded that the CDM could provide more financial support for construction and maintenance of household biogas plants.
