| As the principal part of the natural productivity of a city, urban greenbelt is one of the necessary conditions for the improvement of the urban environment, scenic style and features, and the recreation conditions as well as the guarantee of the sustainable development of the city. It is also one of the important signs for the quality of the zoology, life, and civilization of the city.Under the effect of both the natural and the social factors, Urumqi has a serious air pollution problem and poor environment quality. To make things much worse, it is located in a typical arid and semiarid hungriness, which add to the difficulty and requirement of the landscape greening. Since Urumqi is stepping up her way to National Garden City at present, the research of her urban greenbelt landscape is of great practical significance. With the theory and research method of landscape ecology, and the support of GIS and RS, we create a spatial database of the urban greenbelt landscape in Urumqi and do a quantitative analysis on the status in quo of the urban greenbelt landscape pattern in Urumqi. The result shows that the greenbelts in Urumqi are mainly small-sized, while the medium-sized and large/medium-sized are rare. The urban greenbelts are with low diversity, high dominance, uneven ratio of different landscapes and higher fragmentation in the new urban area than that in the old. The density of the greenbelt line corridor is thin, while the spatial distribution pattern of the greenbelt trends stochastically. The public greenbelts are scarce and collectively distributed, thus forms large number of greenbelt service blind areas. Different types of greenbelt are of low fractal dimension and regular shape. By virtue of the analysis and estimate of the status in quo of the greenbelt landscape in Urumqi, we research on the greenbelt landscape zoology construction of Urumqi and put forward our proposals, according to the principles and gist of the urban greenbelt landscape ecological construction.
