The crop growth simulation model and decision support for cultural management were the core contents of informational and digital agriculture. The crop growth simulation models supplied the new measurements with informational and digital agriculture. Decision support system for cultural management made that the simulation model into practice and promoted the development of digital agriculture. This research was focused on application of the system analysis principal and mathematical modeling techniques to study of knowledge expression system for herbage growing management. Based on collecting and understanding, analysis, extraction and integration of experts, knowledge and experience for herbage growing management, using the theory of herbage cultivation management, the dynamic relationships of herbage management, ecological environments and production levels were analyzed, and important decision-making points were taken into account. This research paid more attention to the establishment of knowledge models. The important models which related to herbage growing consisted of 7 models, such as cropping system arrangement, variety choice, seeding date choice, cutting date choice, fertilizer(N, P, K) application, water operation, yield forecasting. The cropping system arrangement was confined by temperature and rainfall factors. Palatability (crude protein, vitamin etc) and disease/pest resistance were used as the main indexes of herbage variety choice. The seeding dates could be confirmed by recalculating the accumulative temperature and integrating the local conditions. The models for fertilization (N, P, K) were included in system, paying special attention to biological nitrogen fixation for legumes. The system of soil-herbage-atmosphere was used to simulate the water circle. Net photosynthetic yield and dry matter partitioning coefficient are modeled in yield simulation model. Based on the development of dynamic knowledge models for herbage management and utilization of the soft component designing principle, the system coupled and integrated the knowledge model base and knowledge base system. The decision support system would help make herbage growing management more scientific, quantitative and informational. The DSS consisted of database, knowledge base, model base and reasoning engine and it could also play an important part in the functions of cultural plan design, herbage quality index prediction, dynamic management regulation, expert knowledge consultation and system maintenance. In a word, users could search for available information fast, and the system also provided the substantial production decision for users.
