Based on machine vision system, the main purpose of this study was to detect egg size by digital image processing and to establish correlation model. Eggs images were captured by CCD camera based on VFW (Video for Windows). The main contents and conclusions of the study are as follows:1) The hardware system based on machine vision was established, which was composed of computer, CCD camera, lamp-house and test worktable. The test software system designed by Visual C++6.0 provided a user-friendly enviroment for image capturing, processing and analyzing such as image enhancement, image segmentation, edge detection, region labeling etc.2) With regard to image preprocessing, captured eggs image was enhanced by means of gray-scale transformation. Comparing eggs image filtered by the methods of dilation and erosion with that did by neighborhood averaging and that did by media filtering, we found media filtering of 3*3 square window was the best choice.3) For image segmentation, image segmented by mode method and that segmented by reconstruction technique were almost identical. In addition, single egg was recognized by connected components labeling. The edge of eggs got respectively by five edge-detected operators including Robert operator, Sobel operator, Laplacian operaters and Prewitt operator were compared with each other. Thereinto, the edge of eggs detected by Robert operator was the best.4) Eggs were weighed by electronic balance and measured by vernier caliper. Five feature values of each egg including region area, perimeter, length, width and coefficient were got by test software. Then regarding five feature values as independent variables and eggs's weight as dependent variable, we established eggs' weight model by principles of statistics, which is as follow:Weight=-3.3775+0.0023*AreaIn addition, regarding the maximum length and width of egg measured by vernier caliper as dependent variables and two feature values that were length and width as independent variables, we got another two dimension models, which are as follows:...
