There are wide ranges of arid and semiarid areas in China, where is short of water, and the phenomena of water waste in agriculture is serious, Water Use Efficiency (WUE) is relatively lower. A field experiment was conducted in view of crop (summer maize) water consumption pattern, which could offer definite academic basis for developing mulch agriculture in arid districts.According to the principle of water balance, summer maize water requirements (ET) of every growth stage was determined, which was brought to bear FAO Penman-Montieth formula to compute Reference Evapotranspiration (ET0), got corresponding crop coefficient (Kc) of corresponding plant environment.Under mulch condition, this study used the principle of water balance to make certain summer maize water requirements (ET) of every growth stage, and brought to bear FAO Penman-Montieth formula to compute Reference Evapotranspiration (ET0), get the stage crop coefficient to under corresponding plant condition, which was suitable to experimental area in this paper, in order to provide theory bases for established irrigation schedule of summer maize under mulch planting. The results were as follows:1) The general water requirement of summer maize planting mulch is 386.53mm, and the average daily water consumption density is 3.25mm/d in 2005. Compared with planting bare-land, the general water requirement of summer maize planting mulch was 34.14mm lower. The key stage(jointing~milky ripening)of crop water requirement got the top of all growth stage, which was 50% of general crop water requirement. WUE of summer maize planting mulch got at 16.93kg·(hm2·mm)-1, higher than bare-land 33.31%. As for crop coefficient of summer maize, this paper got mulch planting lower than bare-land planting, and the two treatments had similar changing trend in key stage of crop coefficient that has get tiptop, the result of mulch planting was 1.184 and bare-land was 1.867, the changing trend of crop coefficient is increasing by degrees~descending.2) The change trend of soil moisture in different crop growth stages was similar. The change trend of soil moisture from upper to lower without effective precipitation: the soil moisture in 0~140cm soil layer decline, and that in 140~200cm soil layer increase; the change trend with efficient precipitation: the soil moisture in 0~20cm soil layer increase, and...
