With the implementation of national natural forest protection project, how to efficiently use and add value to plantation has become the focus of scientific research and domestic industry. Facing to the current state of forestry resources structure in China and the increasing requirement of wood for outdoor use, it is necessary to carry out the research on wood thermal treatment. In this paper, the poplar and fir were used as samples to thermal treatment. The temperature rises at the rate of 100℃/h to 180℃, 200℃, 220℃ respectively. Keep the temperature for 1h, 2h and 3h. The dimensional stability, chemical component and color of the treated wood were examined. The results are shown as follows.1. The dimensional stability of treated wood is better than the untreated wood. Both fresh wood and air dry wood can be treated under the same thermal treatment method.2. The FTIR analysis shows that with the temperature increasing and keeping time extending, the hydroxyl groups in wood reduce. Due to the reduction of hydroxyl groups in wood after treatment, the dimensional stability increases. The decrease of the C=O, -CH3 in treated wood shows that hemicellulose degrades during thermal treatment.3. The color of the treated wood is affected by the thermal treatment temperature and keeping time. Under the same temperature, the color becomes darker and the color difference becomes more obvious with the increase of the keeping time. The higher the temperature, the dark the color is.
