In order to verify the main biological characters of waxy hybrid rice, and provide the theory instruction for production application of waxy hybrid rice. The main biological characteristic of waxy rice parents and waxy hybrids had been studied, as well as the main nutrition components and some of the cooking and eating quality of waxy hybrids had been analysed. The main results were as following:1. Biological characteristic of waxy rice(1) Waxy and nonwaxy male sterile lines had the same growth duration, the extremely similar agronomic traits, such as panicle character, spikelet character, as well as pollen sterile characteristics; and the photoperiod (temperature) sensitive genic male sterile line also had the same fertility alteration characteristics.(2) The tiller between waxy and nonwaxy maintainers, restorers, and hybrids showed no significant difference in all stages of growth duration. There were also no significant difference in flag leaf, second leaf from top, first internode from top, second internod from top, third internod from top, fourth internode from top, and the growth duration between waxy and nonwaxy maintainer, restorer and hybrids except D62wxB.(3)There were also no significant differences in traits of productive panicle and grain number between waxy and nonwaxy rice, except that waxy rice had more grains per panicle than nonwaxy ones, and there were no regular rulers in productive panicle. Except for Minghui86wxR, waxy rice had higher seed setting rate than its corresponding nonwaxy ones, among of them ll-32wxB, Suhui527wxR, D62wxA/明恢86 wxR and D龙特浦wxA/蜀恢527 wxR showed significant difference to their corresponding nonwaxy ones. Waxy rice had the lower 1000-grain weight (1000-brown rice weight) than their corresponding nonwaxy ones, and the difference is significant.(4)The yield of waxy rice were lower than their corresponding isogenic lines and some of the waxy parents showed significant difference to their control , but no significant difference between waxy hybrids and nonwaxy ones had been found.(5)Except for D62wxB and Minghui86wxR, traits on grain (brown rice) length, grain (brown rice) width, grain (brown rice) thickness and length/width showed no significant difference between waxy rice and nonwaxy ones.(6)The components contributing to yield according to their importance were 1000-grain weight, grain number, productive panicle and seed setting rate for the original hybrids, while 1000-grain weight, seed setting rate, productive panicle and grain number for waxy hybrids.(7) The initial grain filling power (R0), the maximum grain filling rate (Gmax) and the mean grain filling rate (Gmean) of waxy hybrids were lower than those of the nonwaxy ones, though the time reaching to the 99% grain weight(t(99%)) was little longer in waxy hybrids, and as a result ,the grain weight of waxy hybrids was lower.2. Nutrition ingredient detection and rice quality analysis(1) The average of crude protein content of waxy hybrids was 10.41%, which was 4.94% higher than their corresponding nonwaxy ones, and the increase range of crude protein in the all of the waxy hybrids was 2.62-7.69%.(2)The contents of all kinds of amino acids and total amino acids were higher in waxy hybrids than that in their corresponding nonwaxy types, but the difference was not significant.(3)There were higher content of Ca, Cu, Fe, but lower content of Mg in waxy hybrids than that in their corresponding nonwaxy types, there had no regularity changes in the minimal element contents of Na and Mn between waxy and nonwaxy rice.(4) Except II-32wxA/minghui86wxR, higher content of saturated and unsaturated fatty acid was found in waxy hybrids.(5) The quality indexes of waxy hybrids were similar to the conventional variety jinnuo 6, among them nonwaxy grain rate is 0, whiteness is 1 level, gel consistency is over 100mm, gelatinization temperature varied from 4.0 to 6.0 levels, amylose content is 2.0% 2.2%, and the protein content is high, with the change from 11.1% to 12.5%.
