The purpose was to investigate the effect of Aloe Vera L. on performance and enhance of immunomodulation in Broilers. First, the effect of aloe power on production performance and immune function was investigated in different gender broilers. Then the effect of Aloe power, Aloe ethanol extract and Aloe water extract on performance and enhance of immunomodulation was studied in male broilers. To ascertain the mechanism about how aloe enhances the broilers immune function, immune organ development, immune cells proliferation, antibody level and Natural killer cell lethality were studiedResearch method:1. 120 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler and 120 one-day-old female Arbor Acres broiler were randomly divided into two group respectively, each group included six replicates (10 birds per replicate) .Group I was the male control group and Group III was female control group fed with basal diet, Group II and Group IV fed with the basal diet supplemented with 600mg/kg aloe power were the male aloe power group and female aloe power group. The whole experimental period was 7 weeks. Body weight, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio, the index of immune organs, T and B lymphocyte proliferation, Newcastle disease antibodies and natural killer cell activity were mensurated.2. 360 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler were randomly divided into six groups, each group included six repeats (10 birds per replicate).Group I was the control group fed with basal diet. Group II ,Group III. Group IV and Group V respectively fed with the basal diet supplemented with 600mg/kg aloe power,600mg/kg aloe water extract ,600mg/kg aloe ethanol extract,600mg/kg aloe water extract and 600mg/kg ethanol extract ,150mg/kg aureomycin. The whole experimental period was 6 weeks. Body weight, average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion ratio, the index of immune organs, T and B lymphocyte proliferation, Newcastle disease antibodies and natural killer cell (NKC) activity were mensurated..Results:1. Feed conversion ratio of male aloe group was significantly lower than male control group (P <0.01).The ADG of male aloe, female aloe group had an upward trend compared with the control group (P >0.05).2. Index of spleen of male aloe powder group was significantly higher than control group on 21d(P <0.05).lndexes of thymus and bursa of male aloe powder group and female aloe powder group showed a rising tendency compared with control group (P <0.05)on 21d and 42d. The titers of antibody against new castle disease virus (NDV) of male aloe group was significantly higher than control on 21 d (P <0.05).Natural killer cell activity of male Aloe powder group was significantly higher than control group on 49d (P<0.01). T and B lymphocyte proliferation of male and female aloe powder groups showed a rising trend compared with control group (P> 0.05) on 21d and 42d.3. The 21d and 42d body weight and daily gain of aloe water extract group was significantly higher than control group (P<0.05),and showed a rising tendency compared with aureomycin group (P>0.05).The 21d and 42d body weight and daily gain of aloe ethanol extract group and the mixture group(Group IV) showed a rising trend compared with control group, but the difference was not significant (P>0.05).Feed conversion ratio(FCR) of aloe group ,aloe water extract group, aloe ethanol extract group were significantly lower than control group among 4-6 weeks (P<0.05).FCR of mixture group(Group IV) was significantly lower than control group among 4-6 weeks (P<0.05).FCR of aloe power group, aloe water extract group, aloe ethanol extract group, were significantly reduced than aureomycin group among 4-6 week (P<0.05). During the entire period, FCR of aloe water extract group and aloe ethanol extract group were significantly lower than control group (P<0.01). Compared with aureomycin group, feed conversion ratio of aloe water extract group significantly reduced (P <0.05). 4. Index of spleen of aloe group, aloe water extract group, aloe ethanol extract group and mixture group were significantly higher than control group on 21day (P<0.05).Index of thymus and the titers of antibody against new castle disease virus (NDV) of aloe water extract group was significantly higher than control group (P<0.05). The 21d and 42d natural killer cells activity of all the treatment groups was significantly higher than control group ( P <0.01).Natural killer cells activity of all the treatment groups was significantly higher than the aureomycin group (P<0.01)on 21d.T and B lymphocyte proliferation each treatment group showed a rising tendency compared with the aureomycin group (P>0.05)on 21d and 42d (P>0.05).Conclusion:1. Aloe powder could improve body weight, reduce feed conversion ratio and enhance immune function to both gender broilers. But the effect is better on male broilers than on female.2. Aloe water extract and aloe ethanol extract could enhance performance and immune function in male broilers, and the effect of Aloe water extract was better than aloe ethanol extract.
