We documented the influence of vegetation cover on winter habitat selection of red deer population in Wupao Forestry Area, Yingchun, Heilongjiang. The techniques applied contain 3S, Wavelet analysis, field investigation and sample design comparison between habitats of utilized and available.Resource selection function used to simulate winter habitat selection of red deer showed an equation: P=1/(1+Exp(-(4.044-0.10X1+0.143X2-1.666X3-6.778e-005X7+3.42*10-4X8-0.001X9)));X1—Elevation, X2—Slope direction, X3—Slope; X7—Prey pressure; X8—Distance to harvest point, X9—Distance to road. RSF indicated that topography, inter-population relation and human disturbance formed the principal impacts on winter habitat selection of red deer.According to the results of wavelet analysis, we concluded that vertical spatial scale of vegetation cover is 1800m with a peak value on the left and right. The level and diagonal scale is 900m with a peak value. There is the most abundance information about vegetation cover under peak value scale. The spatial distribution probability figure from wavelet analysis indicated the probability of red deer occurrence will increase with the enlarge of spatial scale. This result was proved from vertical, level, diagonal analysis. The influence scales of vegetation cover spatial heterogeneity on red deer spatial distribution are 112×112m and 896×896m。By the scale of 112×112m, the relation function between vegetation cover (X) and red deer distribution (Y) is Y=7.958-28.836X+27.697X2, and this scale represented Forestshrub edge.By the scale of 896×896m, we obtain the equation of vegetation cover (X) and red deer spatial distribution (Y): Y=-4.316+23.584X-27.021X2. This scale represented certain ecological factors: road and logging spots.
