The research of landscape pattern has always been the keystone in Landscape Ecology. Since the remote sensing (RS) can obtain large scale and multiple-time images, it has become the main means of getting basic data for landscape pattern analysis. With the powerful functions of data management and spatial analysis for GIS, The 3S technology can cater to the requirements for landscape pattern analysis much better than before while combining the reinforce from GPS to RS. As a result, it has become an absolutely necessary tool for landscape ecology study. The Three Gorges Reservoir project is the largest hydropower project on the stocks in the world. It is vital important to keep the landscape environment in a good condition in order to ensure the project runs in effect. To establish the forest resource spatial database of the Three Gorges Reservoir, we used the result of the national survey of forest resource planning design (2003) and the stock maps about the reservoir area, together with the 3S technology and the landscape ecology principles in this thesis. The forest resource characteristics were studied via the GIS spatial analysis and statistic functions, and the integrated forest landscape ]patterns were investigated quantitatively according to the corresponding indexes. The results indicated that the distribution of the forest resource is asymmetry. The forest dominates mainly in the middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang river, yet the forest fragmentation is still quite intensity. The typical analysis of the landscape pattern dynamic changes in the subcountries of Three Gorges Reservoir was done with the land use maps and Landsat satellite images in different periods as well as the GIS, and the landscape type area transfer matrix was calculated by the application of the spatial statistics methods. The aim of this paper was focused on the primary landscape pattern changes about the largest area lost county——Zigui county (Hubei Province) due to the dam built since the launch of the Three Gorges Project. With the implement of a series of forestry policies and scientific planning, the forest resource condition in Zigui has been improved a lot compared with 15-years ago, though it is still inadequate. At the same time, the landscape fragmentation has played down with high ecology diversity. Its successful rules may offer some theoretical gist and scientific methods for the ecological management in the Three Gorges Reservoir, which is beneficial for the maintenance of diversity, the sustainable development and the ecological environment construction in this area.
