RHIZOMA PARIDIS is the dry rhizome of Paris polyphylla Smith var.Yunnanensis(Franch) Hand Mazz or aris polyphylla Smith var. Chinensis(Franch) Hara in Liliaceae, which main distribute in Yunnan, Sichuan and Guangxi province et al. Now it has attracted comprehensive attentions because of its pharmacological function of hemostasia, anti-cancer, anti-procreation, anti-bacterium, anti-inflammation, analgesia, sedation, antitussive, antiasthmatic et al. In this study 25 accessions of Rhizoma Paridis(decoction pieces and crude drug) from different collections were identified. Four Steroidal saponins compounds were simultaneous determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatography Reversed-Phase. Nine inorganic elements Fe,Mg,Mn,Zn,Cu,Cr,Ca,As and Hg in Paris polyphylla were determined by FAAS.The main results were described as follow:1. In 25 accessions, 22 accessions came from Rhizoma Paridis, but the other 3 accessions were counterfeit drug. The result shows that in medicinal materials market in China quality goods and counterfeit exist synchronously, and their quality have significantly differences. So these problems should be resolved immediately.2. A comprehensive analytical method based on high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection reversed-phase has been established for the Simultaneous determination of four steroidal saponins in Paris polyphylla. The column was Zorbax eclipse XDB C8,150mm×4.6mm 5μm at 40℃, mobile phase was acetonitrile-water(40: 60), UV detection was performed at 203nm. The flow rate was 1.0ml/min. The result shows that the calibration curves showed good linearity over the range of 0.4012~4.028μg, R=0.9996~0.9999, the recoveries were 99.1~103.1% for the four steroidal saponins, and the contents of the four steroidal saponins in Paris polyphylla were different with different sources. This method is simple with good reproducibility and selectivity and high sensitivity, which provides a method for quality control of Paris polyphylla. 3. The content of nine inorganic elements were various, but each inorganic element content in different collection sites was almost in the same magnitude. The CVs of each inorganic element in 17 different collection sites is as follow: Mg,As,Mn,Hg,Zn,Cr,Fe,Cu,Ca. The result of correlation analysis showed the content of Fe,As and Hg had significant positive correlation with the content of Mg, the content of Mg,Cu and Hg had positive correlation with the content of Ca, the content of Zn had positive correlation with the content of Cu,the content of As had positive correlation with the content of Hg, respectively, and the content of Cr had negative correlation with the content of Zn.
