For the research and development of excellent indigenous ground cover plants, based on the research production of Hunan Agriculture University characteristicornamental innovative base, systemic study on the character of figure, growth deve-lopment law, propagation methods, cultivation techniques, shade-tolerance andgardening application, providing scientific basis for extend application and furtherresearch on Potentilla kleiniana. The main results are as follows:(1) Study on the character of figure, growth-development law: Potentillakleiniana was short perennial herb, with two leaf types commas basal leaf and stemleaf commas usually performing 5-palmate; It had two kinds of stems including stolonabove and shortened stem below, the stolon was a flower organ as well as a nutritivepropagation organ, and there was anthotaxy on the top of it, with the formation ofsecondary anthotaxy from the secondly and thirdly nodes of base. Its flowers wereyellow and stems length were 1.0cm~1.4cm, and a cyme produced 35~65(80)flowers. Potentilla kleiniana with no evidence dormancy period, grew acerose stolonswhich clung to the ground from the shortened stems that concentrated on the groundin mid February every year. It continuously gave birth to daughter plants which couldproduce large numbers of roots that could establish a growth center from the third tothe sixth node of stolons at the end of March to the beginning of April. Florescence, inwhich the young leaves were continuously produced by daughter plants that can forma beautiful layer of green leaves beneath the layer of flowers, reached more than twomonths from the beginning of April to the early June. It become a good foliage effectby pruning remnant flowers in the time after florescence. There was mutualpromotion and restriction in the laws of growth and development between plant itselfand its root system, and the roots grew significantly slower than the above part aftertransplanting of Potentilla kleiniana.(2) Study on the propagation methods: Dividing propagation was the mostimportant propagation method in the production and application of Potentillakleiniana. Dividing propagation which included dividing the tiller seedling(the earlyFebruary~the early March and the early August~the late November)and dividingthe daughter plants with root on the solons(the early May~the early August).Springand autumn were the best time to seed; the sucking buds and the daughter plantswithout roots on the stolons were used as the cuttings in cuttage; and the tissue culture:the best induction medium was MS+6-BA2.0mg/L, the best multiplication mediumwas MS+6-BA2.0mg/L+IAAO.2mg/L, and the best rooting medium was 1/2MS+NAA0.4 mg/L.(3) Study on the cultivation density: In the culture of dividing the tillers, toppingand the seedling of different grades had no significant difference to the time ofcoming into turf. The shortest time(78 days) to come into turf was when it grew in theplanting density of 25cm×30cm.In the culture of dividing daughter plants with root onthe solons, the best nodes for culture were from the fourth to the sixth on the stolons, and the shortest time was 55 days coming into turf when it grew in the plantingdensity of 20cm×24cm. In the gardening application, one must take into account the different climates and seasons when choosing the proper propagative organs andplanting density, for it t to come into turf quickly and perform all right.(4) Study on the shade-tolerance: It indicated that Potentilla kleiniana was aplant which had strong light adaptability after measuring the indexes of figures andPhysiology in different treatments of shadowing. The root, stem, leaf and the wetweight above all reached the maximum number with the lowest damage rate; but itcould still grow as usual and the landscape effect had been achieved when planted inthe shading rates from 0 to 80%.(5) Study on the gardening application: Through the tests of planting in differenthabitats and investigating of the wild environment, it was proven that Potentillakleiniana grows very well in different areas, such as open places, edges of forest orwoodland, under-trees, slopes, paths and waterfronts. It indicated that it had verybroad gardening application prospects, for it was a resource of perennial nativeground covers.
