Five representatives of garden plants were selected as reseach objects, undergoing different lights(3%,23%,68% and 100% sun-shading).These plant species were:Loropetalum chinense var.rubrum, photinia×fraseri, Duranta repens cv.Golden Leaves,Ficus microcarpa cv. Goldon Leaves and Duranta repens 'Gold Edge'.The changes of leaf characters, chlorophyll content and the ratios of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b and photosynthetic characters in leaves of the five color-leaf plants were surveyed in this paper.Based on all indexs, comparative study on shade-tolerance and discuss on application of the five gardenplants. The main results show that:1.Different light treats have effect on leaf color, new branch-growing-amount,stomatal density, leaf area, leaf thickness, leaf water content and specific leaf weight. The color of leaf have significant difference. With the decreasing of light intensity, the stomatal density declined, leaf became thinner, leaf water content increased, specific leaf weight decreased, and leaf area increased in the certain scope.2.Compared with the full light environment, the contents of chlorophyll increased significantly and the ratio of Chl a/Chl b decreased in lower light. The contents of carotenoids have no direct effect on foliage color of the five color-leafed plants. Contents of anthocyanin of Loropetalum chinense var.rubrum were less impacted by light, Contents of photinia×fraseri was decreased with the weakening of light intensity.3.With the weakening of light intensity, the maximum net photosynthetic rate and the light compensation point decreased.,apparent quantum yield of Loropetalum chinense var.rubrum, photinia×fraseri and Ficus microcarpa cv. Goldon Leaves increased.4.Shading treatment had significantly effects on Fo and Fm of all the five color-leafed plants except photinia×fraseri. the Fv/Fm inseased with the weakening of light intensity. NPQ_lss of photinia×fraseri was is the largest of the five species in the four light treatments.5.The comprehensive assessment indicated that these five species had the shade-tolerance in the following order: Loropetalum chinense var.rubrum> Ficus microcarpa cv. Goldon Leaves> photinia×fraseri> Duranta repens cv.Golden Leaves> Duranta repens 'Gold Edge'。6.Discussion on gardening applications acording to the result.
