Based on the current situation of lacking herbaceous plant materials for the project ofconverting land for forestry in Hubei Province, an excellent water and soil conservationplant and forage grass, bahia grass (Paspalum notatum), has been chosen as the materialfor introduction. According to principle of climatic similarity, the difference ofenvironmental factors such as climate and soil between Jiangxi Province, from where thespecies was introduced, and Hubei Province has been analyzed, the suitable range ofbahia grass was compared, the conclusion was drawn that bahia grass can be feasiblyintroduced to Hubei Province. On the basis of this, the regional test, propagation andcultivation technique, development and utilization technique, introduction risk assessmentand control technology, and technology in monitoring and appraise on comprehensivebenefit for bahia grass were studied. The results indicate that:1. Bahia grass is suitable to grow in Hubei Province, and the mountain lands inwestern and southeast Hubei are the best suitable regions for cultivation.2. The proper sowing time of bahia grass is during April to June and the growthperiod is April to October in Hubei. The fresh grass output is generally more than 18~60t/hm~2. The best method of seed treatment is to soak the seed for one day in warm water(40~60℃) before sowing.3. Bahia grass has good functions in conserving water and soil, and improving thesoil and microclimate in forest land, so it is an excellent species for soil and waterconservation. Moreover, it is rich of nutrition and proteins, which make it a good foragegrass. Bahia grass can be widely popularized and applied in the project of converting landfor forestry of Hubei Province.4. Under-forest development is the main utilization technique for cultivation of bahiagrass, and five kinds of under-forest development model, including ginkgo (Ginkgobiloba)+desert false indigo (Amorpha fruticosa)+biologic hedge+bahia grass insloping field, chestnut (Castanea mollissima)+bahia grass in sloping field, fruit treessuch as Citrus reticulata, C sinensis etc.+bahia grass, Eucommia ulmoides+bahia grass,and fast-wood plantation+bahia grass, have been put forword.5. As an exotic species, the introduction and cultivation of bahia grass can becompletely controlled by human, and it will not result in any risk of invasion.
