Abstract/Summary:
Magnolia officinalis is a common Chinese herbal medicine. It was first recorded in《Shenlong Compendium of Medical Materials》. Afterwards, it appeared in variouscompendiums of medical materials. It has been written in the historical version of《Chinese medicines dictionary》. It is made of the dry stem skin, root skin and branchskin of Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils., or Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. Var.bilaba Rehd. ET Wils. It has been listed as a rare and imminent plant and the second classChinese herbal medicine. It is also one of the four kinds of important medical materials(the other three are musk, licorice, hardy rubber bark)managed by the state plan. Beingone of the best local medical materials in Enshi Autonomous Prefecture. It is of highmedical and economic value. There is a great market demand for it. Taking Magnoliaofficinalis seed as research material, the article studies its form and structure, structure ofthe seed skin, length of the embryo, identifies its characteristics of the after-ripening formand structure, tests its speed of absorbing water when treated by different machines, sourand alkali, tests the germination-restraining substances in different parts, and researchesthe sprouting characteristics of the seeds treated by different machines, temperature, sourand alkali. The purpose is to look for the method that can speed up water absorbing andthe germination rate of the seed, to shorten seed-soaking time, and to reduce thesubstances loss in the seed and to provide manual seedling growing with theoretic basisthrough observing its form being dissected and probing into the factors that influence thespeed of water absorbing and germinating. The following are main conclusions.1. The result of the seed's form and structure dissection shows that the seed's shapeof Magnolia officinalis is like an inverted oval, disc-shaped, the outside skin of the seed isred, containing a large amount of oil elements, the inside skin of the seed is of woodenquality, the albumen is abundant and embryo is small.2. The result of treating the outer skin of the seed in organic solution shows thatthe epidermis layer of the skin has red dye, the inside layer of the skin contains a lot ofbrown oil cell.3. The result of identifying the characteristics of the seed in the after-ripening periodshows that the seed of Magnolia officinalis possess after-ripening characteristics in itsform and structure.4. The result of testing the influence on water absorbing speed of the outer and insideskin of the seed shows that the outer skin of the seed will not influence on the speed ofwater absorbing of the seed, but the inner skin of the seed does. 5. The result of testing the influence on water absorbing speed of Magnoliaofficinalis seed treated in sour, alkali shows that treating with 1 mol/L NaOH in 8 hours.6 hours,4 hours does well in raising the speed of water absorbing and increasing theamotmt of water absorbed by the seed. The effect of being treated with 1 mol/L NaOHfor 6 h will be best.6. The result of testing the germination-restraining substances of the seed in differentparts shows that there are a few germination-restraining substances in the outer and innerskin of Magnolia officinalis seed, not in the seed core.7. The result of testing the germination rate of the Magnolia officinalis seed treatedat 15 centigrade degree, 20centigrade degree, 25centigrade degree, 30centigrade degree,35centigrade degree and at varying temperature from 25 to 15centigrade degree tells thatthey are at their best at temperature of 25 centigrade degree.8. The result of testing the germination rate of the Magnolia officinalis seed treatedin sandy soil, warm water, frozen cirumstances shows that they are at their best treated insandy soil.9. The result of testing the germination rate of the Magnolia officinalis seed treatedin acid, alkali shows that they are at their best treated in 1 mol/L NaOH for 4 hours.
