This article takes the primeval Metasequoia population of Xiao he, Lichuancity, Hubei province as the research object. Four sample places which the metasequoiamostly distribute in grouplof Xiaohe village (Q1), group 2of Guihua village (Q2), group2of Xiaba village (Q3), group 3 of Gongqiao village (Q4) have been established.Adopting a way that combining the traditional wild investigation on flora ecology withthe modern quantity ecology, we have made the preliminary investigation of themetasequoia population and the metasequoia community. Worthwhile analyzing andcontrasting the investigative materials of the three sample places (Q1, Q2, Q3) in 1979,we made an analysis of the change of metasequoia community. The investigative resultshows:The scope of the metasequoia distribution doesn't change much from 1979 to 2004.There are two types of distribution: scatter distribution and community distribution. Theformation of the standing forest of the metasequoia is simple. The phenomenon disturbed,destructed by person and harmed by insect is to be existed. The ecological environment isgetting worse; the ability to withstand the natural disaster is weak. The primarypopulation distributes in sections. The growing scale is slight; the mother tree of themetasequoia is getting weak. And it is difficult to renew naturally, so it is easy to declineand even to exterminate. The map of size class of distribution of metasequoia is a shapeof inverted pyramid, the structure of age is in the drop, the quantity of seedling isseriously insufficient, and the natural renewal of the population is extremely difficult. Therange of the change of the individual metasequoia that distributes vertically is bigger; itmainly stands on the first second-place of arbors. The pattern of metasequoia distributionmainly changes according to the circumstances, it distributes mostly between 2m×3mand 5 m×5m along the two sides of the brook. It also indicates that the abilitymetasequoia population occupies the ecological space is weak.The diversification of species of the metasequoia community is rich. There were 149kinds of higher plant, 77 branches, 93 geneses in 1979. But 151 kinds of higher plant, 77branches, 93 geneses in 2004. Two species rise. The layers of the arbors, the bush and theherbaceous are obvious, and there are some plants between levels. The degree of even ofcommunity of the arbors population is low, and the amplitude is not obvious, themetasequoia is the superior population, the important value is prominent, which is between 145.00-191.33. in the twenty-five years, evolution, the change in the structureof size class, the height class as well as the pattern of geometrical distribution is notobvious. The big trees of theⅢclass,Ⅳclass, andⅤclass in the metasequoiapopulation are dominant. The variety of plants in the metasequoia population isincreasing; the important value of the main tree seed has greatly changed. Sevenmetasequoia seedlings ofⅠclass in Q2 sample place have been discovered. It shows theevolution of the metasequoia community is extremely slow.From the view of the research content of protection in biology of plants in theimminent danger at present, we probe the reason and the countermeasures of protection inimminent danger from the aspects of the basic characteristic of population, the life historyof population, the relationship between the interspecies and interspecies, reproduction andecology, variety of heredity and so on. As far as the protection of the important species isconcerned, we must make a further study of ecology of the population; otherwise itsprotection is not complete, we must understand the present situation of the metasequoia,discover the existed problems at present so as to take measures to improve the survivalcondition of the metasequoia, and finally protect the precious and rare plant which is inimminent danger. After 25 years we made the investigation of the same population of themetasequoia once more, and probed the developing tendency of the metasequoia bycontrasting and researching the structure of metasequoia primeval population and thechange of the population. We provide the basis for the protection of the important specieand the diversification of biology; resources of the quality of specie of the metasequoia aswell as for its sustainable development and lay foundation for the restoration ofmetasequoia population and research in ecology...
