Green land in street recreational garden is closely related to people's living. With the improvement of our living environment, nowadays, those gardens serve as an important form of green land that improve the urban environment based on features of small land occupation, diversity in pattern, quick effect and etc. However, the utilization of water in those gardens is irrational in that they satisfied the requirements like landscape etc. but ignored the protection to water resources. The shortage of water resources has attracted worldwide attention, and in the background of global sustainable development, the design of landscape of street recreational garden should also be sustainable, especially the rational utilization of water resources. This study is about the water saving construction of street recreational gardens helps to promote the sustainable development.In recent years, there has been significant achievements in studies on water saving landscape in China and abroad. In China, the water saving measures in garden design is still at its beginning, and the construction of water saving street gardens remains only the collection and utilization of rain water, with much general advocation but not the systematic study. In this study, based on the specific water saving strategy in gardens in China and abroad, the street recreational gardens in Handan City were deeply investigated into, and 6 representative ones have been selected, and statistical analysis has been made on type, tolerant to drought, and resistance etc. of vegetation commenly used in Handan City. Purposeful investigation has been carried out according to the form and material of pavement in street gardens of Handan City, the modality of virescence and irrigation, collection of rain water and the utilization of reclaimed water etc. on the basis of water source saving.In this study, to solve the above problems, the measures in terms of designing a series of water saving street recreational gardens were presented as follows: the selection of drought tolerant vegetation type, rational allocation of these vegetation type to form steady, drought tolerant, reversible, sustainable plant community, the use of new water saving and irrigation technology, unique rain water utilization system, the integration of reclaimed water utilization system with existing surrounding system as well as the utilization of water saving, maintenance and management measures.Through the analysis and research in the water saving in street recreational gardens of Handan, the study offers references for the future construction of water saving street recreational gardens in northern cities to facilitate the sustainable development of green land in the street recreational gardens.
